Reason: Students are more motivated to learn when they are interested in what they are studying.

Nowadays, the issue that courses planning for students has aroused and been widely discussed. Some people think students should take every courses required by school or their teachers in order to graduate while others hold the opposite opinion that students have the right to choose courses what they are interested in because they are more motivated when learning subjects they like. This problem is complicated. Saying that all students, no matter elementary school students or college students, should take courses based on their interests, to some extend, oversimplified the question. After careful consideration, I partially agree with the statement students should have limited right to study what they like. However, in order to address the problem as a whole, the approach is relied on a cade-by-case basis.

To begin with, for students in elementary schools, teachers should plan most courses for students duo to students in elementary school are too young to make right decisions on course taking. Young children tend to be more active than adults and are lack of the ability of making judgments. Of course they have no idea what courses are good for their education now and in the future. They also do not know it is best time for them to learn basic social skills like writing, speaking, and mathematic calculating. So they are required to study basic courses designed by their teachers in order to make sure they can master those basic skills. By doing so, it is not constrain children’s talent but a best way to help them taking advantages of their unique abilities in the future. It is really hard to imagine that a great musician that can not read English literature; It is also difficult to believe an outstanding novelist does not know how to calculate his change when checking out at a supermarket.

In contrast, for students in colleges and universities, students should have more power to choose what they want to study. Normally, college students are above 18 years old. They are adults and should take responsibilities for themselves. One of the responsibilities is taking good care of their own education by themselves. So, they should decide what to learn according to what they are good at. If school force students to take courses, students’ motivation on studying would be hurt. If a student is lack motivation or enthusiasm on studying in college, how could he or she be successful in the future career? Thus the fundamental meaning of education is twisted.

To sum up, should students have the right to choose what they learn is depends on many factors. The most important factor need to be considered is that what type students they are. With the increasing of students’ age, the right to choose courses is increasing.
