History, one of the most important disciplines to study the humanity and society, has been from time to time discussed by the socialists, philosophers, and historians etc., the opinions among whom varies considerably. The significance of history lies not only in its reflection of the past, but also its positive effects on present progress. Therefore, in my view, the speaker's assertion seems to a little absurd and does not carry much weight.

First of all, history, considered as the mirror of the society, plays a crucial role in the development in both individuals and society, since the whole process of a history may have a profound impact in a nation's culture and tradition. Thus by studying the past one can find the root of a culture and civilization. For example, the Japanese are famous for their modesty and manners, because the nation has possessed a history of modesty for thousands of years. Now as long as Japanese are mentioned, the first image comes into people's mind is a modest man or woman with good manners, regardless how rude the Japanese are really are at present. Therefore, history makes a culture rooted in people's mind, and by studying the past will help us to define a culture and civilization more effectively and deepgoing.  

What's more, by studying the past one can infer the present and even the future, since the history indicates the way a society tends to take. Although the present life and society are changing every minute, history is just like a river, which orients where the society is going. Also, history can be compared to the compass that points the direction of the social progress. Take American for example. Although America, unlike many other western countries, does not have a very long history, what it experienced in the few hundreds of years can best embody the prosperity in this country today. In several hundreds of years development, American always keep ahead of other opponents, which can best prove the dominant status in the national society now. History, in a word, is not only the reflection of the past, but also a predict of the future. If the experiences and lessons of the past can be fully learned, human being will enjoy more fruits of the social progress.

However, it is unwise to dwell on the past, which might probably leads to illusion rather than success. China's lesson in the 18th century is a case in point. At that time, China was the most powerful country in Asia, for it had a long history which enjoyed many honors and glories. Thus the leaders of China were proud then close the country to the outside world, which finally resulted in distain and aggression of other countries. Splendid history, admittedly, would establish a sense of national pride, however, if indulged in the glory history, a nation would possibly make no progress, or even worse, move backwards.

To sum up, looking back to the past can surely guide our present life, for the history things make us to set up a self-conviction and national pride. Without history, one will be lost in the diversity of the society due to a sense of disorientation. However, overemphasis on the past may bring about failure at present rather than progress. In a word, only the perfect combination of past and present can make a splendid future.
