Some people believe that in order to be effective, political leaders must yield to public opinion and abandon principle for the sake of compromise. Others believe that the most essential quality of an effective leader is the ability to remain consistently to particular principles and objectives.

        The statement regards a leader to be effective by judging his attitude and response toward the public opinions and particular principles and objectives, which, in common sense, are not sufficient to make the judgement. An effective leader should has not only the ability to examine the public opinions, but also leadership, the ability to handle accidents ,insights to the social trends, being trustful and having faiths to work for his citizens.
        Truly, an effective leader is also a listener, willing to hear different voices and discuss with those opposers. In fact, a society consists with different people, men, women, children, elders, millionaires, beggars, mid-levels, teachers, drivers, gays and lesbians. Their wellbeing is one of the keys to maintain the stability and prosperousness of a society. In the old times, marriages between gays are illegal and even morally wrong, but because of those good listeners----politic leaders and the campaign for homosexual marriage from 1970, America has made it legal in 18 states until 2004, as well as in England, France, German and etc. in the global.
        On the contrary, the conflict between China and Japan for the issue on DiaoYu island has roused the patriotism of Chinese. The event, rejecting and destroying all Japanese products happened in China has caused a national attention. According to the statement, it would be a disaster for the government to compromise with the public opinions. Innocent people would get hurt, their possessions would get lost and the stability of the country would be threatened. Fortunately, our political leaders sticked to the particularly right principles, for the sake of the stability of society, and stop the turmoil timely.
        However, rejecting to compromise with the public opinions without careful consideration doesn't mean to insist on the particular principles and objectives thoroughly. Without a change that yielding to the social trends, the insistence on particular principles will lead the nation to hell. In retrospect, according to the Historian written by Sima Qian, the Qin dynasty was reigned despotically, carrying out many crucial punishments and murdering many confucians because of its disagreement. As a result of its tyranny, its citizens were agitated and full of anger, revolting throughout the country and finally dissipate the government, which had only a 14-year duration.
        Thus, being an effective leader, no matter in the past as an emperor of the country, or in the present as being elected by the citizens, means to devote to the wellbeing of everything as a whole of the nation. Public opinions should be taken into consideration but not the decisive element to make a determination. Only keeping a calm mind to stick to right principles and analyzing the social trends to make changes timely can an effective leader be qualified.

Why it is on the contrary..? Maybe you mean the attitudes towards public opinion about DY island is contrary to that towards homosexual marriage, but I cannot understand this at the first sight...

I do not think your first paragraph is related to the following ones, because you disagree with the statement because

But in the following paragraphs you are talking about two situations (listening to the public & not listening)...
