Whether pragmatic behavior has priority over idealistic view or not is a heatedly discussed issue around us recently. Unlike the statement mentioned above "idealistic views tend to be superceded by simpler, more immediate options", in my view, both kinds of point of view are crucial for us to succeed in any realm of life.

It is easy to believe that any ones undertake irrespective of reality or discard practical point of view are doomed to fail when considering many facts in our lives. People have to face reality for the simple reason that every lives in real world and deals with problems occurring on their way to succeed. Facing the reality directly or, in other words, show their respect to reality, can men have the possibility of solving whatever impede the process of pursuing their goal. For example, during the time of struggling against SARS last year in China, the only way to succeed in curing patients who were suffering from SARS and prevent those healthy people from infecting this deadly disease is to take effective medical measure such as offering available hospitals with isolation ward, available drugs for SARS, and best treating conditions. Besides, press has to take great responsibility to assuage the mass getting rid of scare. If government and physicians hold idealistic view that this disease will be cured by itself or have little possibility to infect citizens. This big problem will never be solved certainly.

Idealistic view, however, plays indispensable role in human history, without which development of society are likely to bog down. Imagine we live in a world without idealism, human will lose one of the most precious inherent ability "creativity", leading to a world with no process of any aspects of our lives. As everybody knows, some things created by human will not be realized in the contemporary time limited by the conditions then. Ideal, in some sense, is the power to direct whole society, which should not be neglected by everyone. We human beings dreamed of traveling in space thousands years ago, we manage to do it now; we once imagined communicating with friends in long distance, we do it everyday now; we are trying to disclose the secret of gene code, we will work it out in future. History tells us we take every step forward on the basis of ideal. Therefore, human beings have to maintain idealistic point of view, otherwise they are only having what they possess at present and making no progress at all.

Now that we are clear about the two kinds of point view, we have to conclude that people should hold the point of view involving both pragmatism and idealism so as to succeed in every realms of life. With pragmatism, men are capable of carrying out rational and effective means to solve practical problems. Yet this is not enough for us to improve ourselves, men have to depend on their imagination or idealistic point of view to conceive what human society are going to be like in future. Besides taking practical measures as offering effective precaution so as not to let populace suffer from any infectious disease as mentioned above, government also has to hold ideal to make our society advance.

In conclusion, the two point of view are equally important for whole human society without either of them will result in chaos and disorder.
