136."The absence of choice is a circumstance that is very, very rare."
"What shall I eat for lunch?" “Which school shall I go to for a further study?” “What kind of job fits me best?” Such questions, which we may probably encounter in everyday, seem simple but imply choices that surrounded us. However, choices vary from the most trivial ones relating to our everyday life, as mentioned before, to the more complicated ones relating to social, political, ethical or philosophical problems such as “to be or not”. To this extent, I agree with the speaker’s assertion that absence of choices is a rare circumstance in today's splendid world. Yet there still exist some circumstances under which we have and should have no choice at all.
First of all, the development of society furnishes us with more various choices. Consider several years before, when the price of airplane was dearly high, people seldom thought of making different choices when they were on travel, because almost the only way was to take a train. On the contrary, due to today's fairly cheap price of airplane, we are facing the choice of traveling by train or by airplane. Moreover, with the great technological innovations, not only do we have airplanes and trains but also magnetic levitation railway and light rail for us to choose as transportation vehicles. How can we imagine such broad range of choices without the rapid advance of our society? Not only in the transportation area but also in the communication field, the advent of modern innovations brings us abundant choices. For example, telephones, cell phones, and e-mails are all rising electronic communication methods that appear as the complements to the conventional ways like letters. In a word, the further the society advances, the more choices we face.
Besides the material enrichment risen by society’s evaluation, contemporary human’s minds have largely opened with the liberation of spirit and the wide and spread of different cultures. As a case in point, women today can choose to acquire further education or go out for work according with their own wills, while long ago, they were fettered by conventions that women should stay at home and focus on the dull housework. Moreover, information spreads at an unprecedented speed. Through the Internet, the satellite broadcast, huge amount of information can be transmitted only in a second, or even in far less time. Therefore, unenlightened mores are struck tempestuously by the powerful wave of humanity, freedom and democracy. People now dare to think the wildest thing they ever conceived and to do the boldest thing they ever imagined. That is, more and more barriers in the way to free choices are broken by ourselves. In front is a broader road.
However, there do exist some circumstances under which we have no choice but to act exactly the only way. This happens when the problem comes to some important issues such as the loyalty to the country and the obedience to the law. Under such conditions, we cannot place ourselves in front of any other alternatives but only stick to our moral principles. This can be explained aptly for the reason that we are not only living creatures but also mortals who belong to a certain community, of which well-balanced function relies on the self-contained regulations. No man could enjoy his right without respond to certain obligation. Consider the issue we are discussing, choose freely is our right while choose properly is our obligation.
In the final analysis, we can reach the conclusion that we are in a dazzling world full of various choices, in which we are thinking more freely. Despite the convenience and excitement it brings us, it is also a challenging test for our human beings, the test for our determination, morality and intellect. It deserves everybody’s concern about how shall we act properly before appealing temptations, how can we pick up the right and the best one, and how can we know what we need indeed. |
