I agree with the speaker’s contention that given the choice, nobody would choose to live in the past or future because the future is unpredictable; the past is ostensibly simpler but at the expense of inconvenience; only today is true and accessible.

It is no doubt that the improvement of the industry and technology have provided us a much more convenient and efficient life that we can hardly imagine a life without them would be. We need to look no further to the things around us--television, computer, refrigerator, car and so forth, all of which have become the part-and-parcel in our life. Modern businesspersons use mobile phones to communicate with one another to seize the time and chances; Students use computers to help them with their homework and find voluminous information from websites; washing machine and dishwasher help homemakers out of the housework. Without them, we may feel uncomfortable. Today’s life is attractive and comfortable.

When it comes to the people that wish to live in the past might at last hesitate to practice their dreams if they were given the chance because the uncertainty of the life is sometimes fearful for them. Actually, the living condition of the people in the future is not necessarily better than is that of us. Wars, hunger, energy exhaustion, environmental problems, all of which are the problems people living in today leave to their descendants. Those who want to live in the future cannot ensure that the time they choose does not has these tough problems that threaten their lives. Therefore, people would be aware of the threats at the very time they make decision.

As for the people preferring living in the past, they would say they prefer serenity to chaos and prefer slowness to haste. Nevertheless, it is a necessity that most improvements of our life are at the costs of other essential human demands--such as leisure time, private space etc. People complain lacking of private space because their bosses can find them by mobiles even in holidays. It is also true that from the Industrial Revolution people's working hour has increased from 40 hours per week to 60 hours per week. People may also feel disgusted at the frequent scandals reported that are attributed to the developed multi media. However, all of these are the sacrifice of the development, which really exists and unavoidable. People prefer living in the past are more likely to live peacefully and simply, which is nothing wrong but modern life just goes another way.

However, I should say it is partly because of human nature those who choose to live in the past. One of the human nature is to desire that is not yet gained and to abandon what is obtained. On one hand, those people may envy the simple and easy lives of their ancestors because they can never go back to the past. On the other hand, they might sometimes overlook the advantages of today's life and have a too high expectation of the life in the past. Although modern life makes these people feel somewhat uneasy, the absence of modern development may also make them bored. Those who know what TV is and how it can entertain people would feel it difficult to get rid of TV entirely. Since their dreams to live in the past can never come true, their preference becomes unbiased and less creditable unattainable things are always more enticing.

In sum, the inclination of this problem is depend on people's own interests and characteristics. Modern life sometimes unavoidably sacrifices simplicity and privacy, which are indispensable in the process of human development. However, living in the past or future is just an unrealistic dream that people cannot achieve. For those who cannot bear the modern life, they should make chance for themselves to be accustomed to it and keep a good mood in the modern life. After all, people can never chance the world; the world chances people.

Actually, this is a problem which could be recognized as a contradictary between substance wealth and spiril life.

People nowadays enjoy their convenience just based on the abundance materials resource instead of kind interactive personal relationship.

The topic is mostly likely  raised by a person who wants to return his spiritual garden, however unwilling to lose the current good conditions.

On the other hand, I disgree the point, you mentioned, that people just want a peaceful life in the past time. In my opinion, they are just preferring the slow life pace because of the suppress confronted.

You can hardly say there is no accidents and problems in another period of the history. While, most people refer the lastest affairs as the most suffering, yet not in fact.
