我觉得that指代的是tradition 所以后面的it指代 the tradition of stonewares or porcelains 这样是不是就说得通了？

So that我说不好，但是我觉得可以直接理解成“因此” their meaning就是一个分句，不是插入语，这几个分句都是句子不用分析成分。你贴上来的就是原句一点变化都没有么？感觉怪怪的...
意思是…然而它们被小心精确地发掘出（没有上下文我不知道work out 是什么），所以在那时，他们的意义是明确的，中国器皿也是如此。
