Issue152. The only responsibility of corporate executives, provided they stay within the law, is to make as much money as possible for their companies.
------正文------
Almost all the classical western economic works including the Wealth of Nations written by Adam Smith convey the connotation that the final aim of a company is to pursue the maximum profits. It has become a maxim that the executives of a corporation should help the company earn money as much as possible under the permission of the law. However, is this the ONLY responsibility of corporate executives? I do not think so. This assertion apparently degrades the responsibility of executives.
Admittedly, to make as much money as possible for their companies staying within the law is one and probably quite an important responsibility of corporate executives. This aim or responsibility has its indispensable value to both the society and the employees of the company. In the first place, according to the connotation documented in the Wealth of Nations, when every single individual or company pursues his/her/its own interests, the whole wealth of the society automatically increases. The spirit of this concept is the foundation of the western economic world till today because it stands true reasonably. Thus, when a company seeks its maximum profits under the leadership of executives, it is creating values to the whole society. In the second place, this action contributes to the initiative and enthusiasm of the employees of a company. An executive who cannot lead a company to earn more and more money would usually arouse the complaints of employees. If an executive cannot fulfill this responsibility, it is hard to imagine he or she can assume other responsibilities well. Therefore, the deed stated in this issue is truly a very significant responsibility for all executives today.
However, the responsibilities of executives of a company are clearly not restricted only within this obligation. In fact, a series of other important obligations should be assumed on the executives' shoulders.
Firstly, corporate executives have the responsibility to provide a healthy environment in which all their employees feel comfortable and enthusiastic to work. In other words, the executives of a company should support a free atmosphere for people to work positively in it. Only by fulfilling this responsibility can workers dedicate their whole hearts into the career of the company, feel satisfied by doing their jobs and realize their values. In this process, the executives should also balance the relationship between employees and employees and between employees and themselves.
Secondly, corporate executives ought to instill a kind of corporation culture into the blood of all their employees. The culture of a company is such an important thing that more and more executives in the world are now paying attention to it and endeavoring to form their company's own special culture. For example, Panasonic has its culture that emphasizes the contribution of every employee and this culture help the company to large extent succeed in the competing market.
Thirdly, corporate executives have to make sure that the company can have a sustainable development. Those who focus their eyes only on the immediate effect without considering the future are doomed to perish. True, they may earn lots of money first, but several years later, the company may suffer the danger of bankruptcy. In this case, the action is a disaster rather than a blessing.
Finally, executives have the obligations to foster well-rounded employees in relatively high morality. In some sense corporation is a career through which society benefits. So the company should raise useful people for society, not those who knows only money.
In conclusion, to run the company within the law is the lowest standard for a corporate executive that he or she must keep and to make as much money as possible for the company is definitely an important obligation of the executive. However, people should not fetter themselves by the only concept of money, but seek some more meaningful pursuits. Only by realizing this and by fulfilling all kinds of responsibilities can the company maintain a sustainable development and can our society benefit most from the great career of corporations. |
