Argument 7
The following is a recommendation from the Board of Directors of Monarch Books.
"We recommend that Monarch Books open a café in its store. Monarch, having been in business at the same location for more than twenty years, has a large customer base because it is known for its wide selection of books on all subjects. Clearly, opening the café would attract more customers. Space could be made for the café by discontinuing the children's book section, which will probably become less popular given that the most recent national census indicated a significant decline in the percentage of the population under age ten. Opening a café will allow Monarch to attract more customers and better compete with Regal Books, which recently opened its own café."
Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the recommendation is likely to have the predicted result. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation.

According to the argument, the Board of Directors of Monarch Books recommends that it is necessary to open a cafe in the bookstore. To justify the argument, several reasons have been listed. On the one hand, since the bookstore has a considerable customer base, it would attract more customers by opening a cafe. On the other hand, considering the most recent national census which manifests a decline in the percentage of population of children, the space for children's book section could be saved for the new cafe. What's more, it could possibly be an advantage in the competition with Regal Books with the help of the new cafe. However, we need to ask a number of questions related to the different aspects of the arguments to evaluate the soundness of the recommendation.
Firstly, investigation should be conducted to figure out why people have affection for Monarch Books. It is beyond doubt that Monarch Books has earned a wide customer base by its broad selection of books on all subjects. It is possible that some customers may also enjoy the cafe with pleasure. However, a number of customers may become disgusted of new cafe since it brings about the dirty and noisy environment caused by food and drinks. Thus, they wouldn't come to Monarch Books again for it cannot provide a peaceful and pleasant reading atmosphere. If so, the recommendation for opening a new cafe could make the bookstore suffer a loss of customers.
Secondly, the actual number of customers in terms of different ages should be investigated thoroughly. Although the result of the most recent national census shows a decrease in the percent of population of young children, it doesn't mean the actual number of children has declined. For example, in recent years, the population of the whole city is increasing at a noticeable speed. Therefore, the number of children indeed increases instead of falling as the recommendation postulates. In this way, the recommendation may not seem that reasonable.
Finally, it is essential to inquire into the factors which make Regal Books more popular in order to gain advantages in the competition. It sounds plausible that it is the opening of a new cafe that attracts more customers for Regal Books. Yet, perhaps other factors may contribute to this success. For instance, Regal Books may make adjustments in the layout of the bookstore to provide a more comfortable reading environment. Or perhaps, the manager of the Regal Books have require the staff to participate in training courses to be more polite and efficient in the service. Without figuring out real reasons for the success of Regal Books, it is not wise to open a new cafe to attract more customers.
To sum up, the recommendation of opening a new cafe is not as reasonable as it seems. Several questions should be answered in regard to the reasons why people prefer Monarch Books, the actual number of customers in different ages and the factors promote the success of Regal Books. Having conduct all this investigations, Monarch Books could be likely to attract more customers.
