Some people believe that the purpose of education is to free the mind and the spirit. Others believe that formal education tends to restrain our minds and spirits rather than set them free.

Write a response in which you discuss which view more closely aligns with your own position and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should address both of the views presented.

I define education as the curriculums - designed by the government – that is used to educate the nations’ students. I totally agree with the speaker’s claim that formal education tends to limit our minds and spirits, which violates the purpose of education that is to set our mind and the spirit free.

The opponents to my view might contend that the formal education can expand students both knowledge, minds and spirits. 在現行的課程安排之下, 不但此languages 和學數等的科目會被安排在課程之下, 而且 美術, 科學 和批判性思考等等的科目都會被加插在課程表。前者的科目教授學生基本的知識, 而後者的科目開發學生的獨立思考能力和開發他們的spirts. 在這安排之下, 學生便可以得到雙方面的知識和能力。

However, the above arrangements do not mean that students can learn free their mind and spirts. 事實上, 以上的安排會restrain 學生的minds and spirts. 為了評估學生是否得到某方面的知識, 學校會安排一系列的測試。 而這些的測驗都是有標準的答案。為了得到更加的分數, 學生需要學習答題技巧。這些技巧都會规范學生的minds and spirts. For example: 每個國家進入大學的公開試是一個有力的例子証明學生是在追求標準答案的分數, 而不是追求free their minds and spirts.

Furthermore, since students are trained to think inside the box, their ability to perform job duties fails to meet the company expectations, particularly in the area of creative and scientific area. 現代社會的創意和科研公司都要求員工具備創造的能力。學生以往的訓練局限了他們的能力和在工作上的發展。因此, 大部分公司都要求學校需要更改現行的課程表, 提倡訓練學生to free their minds and spirts. 只有在這樣的安排之下, 學生畢業後才能夠勝任工作。

王老師的comment: 原本的提網不太match新G的作文要求。要做到更良好地表達題目的要求, 考生應該把 “Students”作為一個重要的variable去評論這一題。我們可以分成3種students: primary, Secondary and High students。

新的提網如下:
Some people believe that the purpose of education is to free the mind and the spirit. Others believe that formal education tends to restrain our minds and spirits rather than set them free.

Whether the purpose of education should free the mind and the spirit of us, or restrain the minds and the spirits of us, is contingent on the types of people. For the purpose to educate the primary students to equip the habit to explore the world, the purpose of the education should free their mind and the spirit. For the purpose to facilitate the secondary students to achieve better results in the public examination, the purpose of the education should tend to restrain their minds and spirts. For the purpose to train the university students becoming all round, the purposes of education should include both restrain and free their mind and spirt.

The major purpose of education for the primary students is to encourage those pupils’ interests in pursuing the knowledge about the world where they are living in. To achieve this goal, it is no doubt that teachers and schools should make an attempt to help the students to equip the ability in asking questions and pursuing further knowledge about doubts, rather than limit the thought of the students by educating them with model answers. Students would be able to develop the ability in seeking information and knowledge, which assist students to become independent. For example, Western primary students show a better ability in managing or solving doubts while compared with the Asian primary students. While the Western pupils are cultivated the method to seek the true of the doubts themselves in the schools, the Asian pupils are cultivated the mores of following the suggestions made by their parents or teachers. At a result, Western primary students show a better ability than the Asian students in tacking the doubts.

Once it comes to the discussion about the major purpose of the education for the secondary students, the perspective of restraining minds and spirts of the students should be advocated. After all, the major purpose of the secondary students is to achieve good results in the public examination and hence, they get a ticket allowing them to enter the university or college education. 在這一前提之下, 學生要學懂應考的技巧。應考的技巧只可以通過不斷地重複練習考試的題目, 從而令到學生熟識考試的標準思考方法。所以, 這一階段的學習理應限制學生的自由發揮。

While the discussion is related to the purposes to educate the university or college students becoming all round individuals, the education should firstly restrain the students’ minds and spirts, and then secondly set them free. 只有熟識議題的相關知識, 學生才能夠明白該領域的不足OR創出一套就的學說。For example: research students在讀PHD的時候, 他們被要求去學習很多的知識。只有在他們熟讀議題相關的知識, 他們才可以寫出較好的文章。
