【求定位】好学校好专业里的渣渣想读MFE或计量金融求定位~

主修课程与成绩：数学分析C、高等代数B、常微分方程C、偏微分方程C、C++程序设计B+、数值分析B、线性规划和非线性规划C、实变函数C、泛函分析D、组合优化A-

GT：V147+Q168+W3.5，T104（S23+L24+W27+R30）

科研：正在参加学校的本科生科研项目，自主选题，课题是对公共交通系统进行优化和定价研究，未结题，无publication。简历上把上课时的小组课题比如程序设计课的算法研究也写到了科研经历栏。

获奖：学校三等奖学金，学校优秀团员，以及几个校内外体育田径（长跑）的奖项

推荐信：找了4个老师，1.应用数学教授兼博导，国内各类数学建模竞赛主要评委之一，2.计算数学教授兼博导，国内计算数学界代表人物，3.科研项目导师，应用数学讲师，4.应用数学副教授，程序设计课老师

实习经历：500强快消行业的人力资源，过几天准备到国有四大银行实习

其他：在校团委干过两年小干部，组织过几次团组织会议；在学生勤工助学中心担任过经理；参加过几次数学建模比赛但都没获奖；有基础的C++和MATLAB编程能力和SPSS的基本应用；懂一点用photoshop和flash做设计；爱好比较广泛，体育音乐都玩玩，主要是长跑获奖较多；出生在沿海经济发达地区

说明一下：

成绩尤其是数学专业课成绩真的很渣啊T_T出国读金工做Quant是大四上学期才决定的，用一个学期数战GT，但是G还是考得不理想。没有相关实习，现在正在申请，发现已经选好的学校都太好了怕被全拒啊！！！考研和找工作秋招都错过了，现在只能一门心思搞申请了。

今年出不去就只能留校等明年再谋出路了，求寄托的各位给点建议，本人的背景能申到哪些学校？还有写Essay可以突出写些什么？小女子在此跪谢了。。。

please list out your list of application (uni + program) if possible.

my suggestion = reconsider your plan......

your GT is not a problem, but your major GPA is the only major one.
good MFE program all look at your math grade. (and/or working experience if you have some)
3rd-tier MFE program = waste of $$ and time, as the pool of relevant roles is small.

if you really want to try, i will suggest you try some US 2nd-tier one (around 9-1X, though risky), and some from HK (X2), SG(X3) and UK (top 3-5), but I guess the chances is not really high.

P.S. .........is that the case your department give out really horrible grades? 2.9/4.0 = 12/60.....

目前主要申请的专业是金融数学和MSF，因为MFE好的学校似乎太难。申请MSF的学校有WUSTL,雪城，南加大，Boston College;申请金融数学的学校有哥大，Boston U, Uconn,伍斯特理工；申请MS Quantatitive Finance的学校有WUSTL,Rutgers,荷兰的鹿特丹和阿姆斯特丹自由大学；申请MFE的学校有UCLA,NYU poly,罗彻斯特理工。

上面申请的都是MS。UCLA这类dream schools只是申着试试看。

请问对申请的学校还有何建议吗？申请文书有没有必要解释GPA低的原因？如果需要该如何解释？

1. you need a couple of reference letters, clearly stating your ranking or percentile in the class.

2. be realistic, financial engineering is a narrow discipline. you cannot go down too much to the ranking in order to get an admission. you will still have some chances for a job for the 2nd tier one, but if you go further down.......you will get an admission but not a job.

3. there're limited number of MSF worth applying in US. to me, at most one or two in your list worth considering. due to the non-STEM nature, prepare to go back home directly after it......

4. indeed, it is quite a joke for someone want to go US in Fall 2015 still asking for opinion for school list now.....


some personal opinion, really personal and may be a bit offensive to some others:
MSF的学校有WUSTL, 雪城，南加大，Boston College - not sure about WUSTL, BC is okay (okay given the name Boston)........forgot about USC (location....and quality), at the end US MSF is for milking tuition from student only....and US had really few chances for non-STEM

申请金融数学的学校有
哥大，(good one that worth trying but it is not easy...)
Boston U,
Uconn(i never saw it on recent quantnet ranking),
伍斯特理工(what is that? is it something can be eaten?)；

申请MS Quantatitive Finance的学校有
WUSTL,
Rutgers, (try the one in math school first.....)
荷兰的鹿特丹和阿姆斯特丹自由大学(try something before the VU.....)；

申请MFE的学校有
UCLA, (good one, but remember it start in Spring)
NYU poly, (ppl, esp. those working in NYC, they know it is poly......but still worth applying as safety)
罗彻斯特理工 (again, i never see it on the rankings......)。

suggest you to also look into the followings:
TU Munich math for fina & actuarial, EPFL MFE
U Amsterdam (act. sci and math fina, stoc and fina math)
HKUST MAFM, HKU MFin & MStat, NUS MFE & MSQF, NTU MFE, SMU MQF
not likely you will get admission from Ox MSMCF, Cam MPhil Fina (FE), Imperical Math fina,........but i guess you may try Warwick MSc Fina Math, UCL Fina Math (not a really good one but the name of the school is good), Edinburgh, Manchester...........
maybe also Fordham MSQF (i hate it.....but the location and placement are okay), abd JHU Fina Math
i guess the deadline for Toronto MMF, Waterloo MQF had passed already, and also Western Stat (Fina model)

Thanks for your suggestions!

I have applied to ten schools or so & considered other schools you recommended. Indeed, it is not worth wasting tuition on schools ranking behind.

not to mention that will make your CV dirty.

suggest you consider a bit more on the European side than North America since the time schedule.

楼主我也是今年申MFE的，GPA有点太低了，貌似在QUANTNET上看到过2.7进rutgers MSMF的。建议试一下数学院的这个，校友的反馈还是不错的。纽约城里面的fordham也建议试一下，虽然学校排名一般但是在NYC也算是有一定名气的，而且项目里的校友反应学的东西比较实在。

我被nyu poly 和 rutgers mqf录了

我有点犹豫是否要去读，自己的申请是不是做失败了，gap一年工作后重申会不会好些

我的背景是这样的
学校：中央财经大学（金融专业）
GPA:3.74
GRE:Q170/V157/W3.5
托福：106
雅思：8
金融类实习较多，有在Rutgers的交换经历，其中一份accounting的实习在NYC

我在决定申金工后补了baruch和quantnet开的一个c++网课

if it is a good one, gap一年工作后重申会好些 (or more)

both program are still okay......but not top one.
no solid indea that which one is better.

你好，想问下如果在国内的私募基金先做一年quant，对申请金工的帮助大吗？我15年fall的金工和统计混申，目前只收到保底校Columbia和GWU的统计AD，个人不是很想去，金工方向申请的program都是tier 1和tier 2的，可能定位太高，收到的都是拒信。

个人背景：
G: V156/ Q168 AW 3         T:102 (S 24)
211财经 信息与计算科学专业 GPA：3.58  Major GPA：3.84
因为参加学校的项目大四的时候转去澳大利亚一个非八大内的学校读精算本科 GPA： 3.72 澳洲精算师考试的part 1已经通过
和金工相关的数学课程分数基本都在90+，数模竞赛拿过两个小奖，发表过一篇水论文，保险公司水实习。我觉得没有相关的实习经验可能是申请失败的原因，因此现在一家私募基金里做量化分析的工作，并准备考FRM的level 1。这样的话对背景提升大吗？谢谢！

應該有不少的幫助的, 雖則我覺得你申一上不是因為這個....
問題是, 你如果已經能在国内的私募基金做quant的話, 你為啥還要申金工?

還有就是, 你也可能會想多做一年, till have 2 year of working experience............

因为觉得光本科的学历在这一块不够用，想读金工的master提升下背景，对以后职业发展会比较好。方便的话能说下我申金工的短板的吗？我觉得我本科学校也不够好，可是已经没有办法，只能从别的地方弥补了。
