http://shanghai.aaschool.ac.uk/
Con:
http://www.aaschool.ac.uk/STUDY/VISITING/beijing

Customised Cities
Directed by Tom Verebes
Hosted at The University of Hong Kong Shanghai Study Centre, Shanghai, China
The 9th annual AA Shanghai Summer School will focus on issues related to the unprecedented extent and rate of urbanization in China, and more specifically, on Shanghai, as a laboratory of one of the preeminent twenty-first century cities. Given the legacy of twentieth century models of assembly-based repetitive production, the effects of standardization on cities today include their universal monotonous, generic similitude. Balancing an agenda concurrently pursuant of spatial coherence and heterogeneity, and hence the distinctiveness of cities, the aim of this visiting school programme is to investigate a toolbox with which to confront the prevalence of default spatial and material modes of production. As an intensive nine-day studio-based course, clusters of tutors and students will engage experimentally with advanced computational design and, and the materialisation of differentiated serial prototypes. Students will apply code-based and time-based modelling, morphogenetic generative techniques, and physics-based simulation, towards multiple, variable and recursive urban and architectural systems.

(Su(pe)rReal 2.0) - Super Mix
Thursday 1 – Friday 9 October 2015
The Beijing Visiting School aims to establish a network platform for cross-disciplinary experiment on data-based design ideas and methodologies. The course offers a great opportunity for those who want to study architectural design abroad or transfer to the architecture major, as participants will experience the international learning environment with critical thinking, experimental design and systematic methodologies. Participants will work with experts from various disciplines including multi-media, gaming, engineer, and visual artists in addition to architecture, to deliver speculative design proposals addressing the issues that the design brief sets up.
The ultimate agenda of the Beijing Visiting School is to test our intellectual discoveries and theoretical implications, so that the new knowledge about the architectural practice through the unprecedented urbanization in China in terms of the scale and speed can be described. We are in the second year of the theme Su(pe)rReal, which essentially investigates the meaning of data to design innovation upon the emerging knowledge pragmatically. Such data-based design theme includes but not limit to data collection, data visualization, data standardization, data spatialization, data conceptualization, and data parameterization into spatial orders.
In Su(pe)rReal 2.0, we will focus on the existing mix-used compound in Beijing with a footprint of 50,000 m2. The objectives are to define explicit architectural descriptions of the quality of the typology of the mix-used compound. There will be three stages during the Visiting School, i.e. the Data Collection and software training prior to the commencement of the Visiting School, the Data Analysis and Visualization and the Design Experiment upon the analytical discoveries.
•Design Skills:
As same as before, AA VS Beijing offers participants opportunities to learn the advanced digital tools such as Rhinoceros, Maya, Digital Project, Grasshopper, Firefly, Python, and Processing. This year, we will also expose participants to some real-time interactive hardware devices such as Arduino and Kinect. One of the most famous Advanced Interactive Technology research group in China will provide extensive technical supports in data tracking, real-time feedback, and interactive environment, according to the agenda of “Su(pe)rReal 2.0”.
• Theories & Methodologies:
Lecture series and tutorials during AAVS Beijing are expected to equip participants with sound understanding of the relevant theories and methodologies related to the VS theme, the application of Big Data for visualizing the invisible forces that drive the organization of physical resources.
• Fabrication:
Participants are encouraged to use physical models in different scales as the medium to test their design ideas as well as to communicate the design propositions.
• Fabrication Facilities:
In addition to the laser cut machines, CNC machines and 3D printers in Tsinghua University, our industrial sponsors will also provide technical assistance to each student.
• Guest Lectures:
Lectures by guest scholars and leading practitioners will showcase both the frontier of applying digital design techniques and theories to the architectural practice in the region, and the methodological explode of the big data through multimedia instruments. |
