7月13日  issue 15  范文模仿

Educational institutions should actively encourage their students to choose fields of study that will prepare them for lucrative careers.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position.

very impressive!

I completely disagree with the statement. Firstly, it is hard to define [decide/determine] and predict which careers will be lucrative careers when the students graduate and enter the job market. Moreover, this suggestion may result in many students studying things they are not interested in and thus be less successful than they could have been. While the colleges and university may want to have more successful alumni, such suggestion may result in the lower satisfaction among the graduates.

挺好 define这个词用的不太对 【改成decide?】

To begin with, it is hard to predict what careers will be lucrative when the students graduate and to suggest them to choose these careers [choose related majors] at the time when they enter the school. To be successful and well paid, one has to have at least the minimum required levels of degrees, knowledge and experience, and the interpersonal abilities. And in many circumstances, the extremely successful people are also the extremely lucky ones who enter the job market at the right time. Taking computer programming as an example, it was very lucrative career at 1990s, but soon experienced a depression in 2002 and lots of people lost their jobs. So it is practically hard for the universities to tell what careers are lucrative to begin with, let along [let alone] prepare the students for the careers that will be lucrative at the time when they enter the job market.

choose related majors
along - alone

Another reason of my disagreement is that, this policy will deter [disuade/discourage] many students from the careers they are interested in, and [instead choosing] careers the seemingly lucrative but they have no passion on. Without the interests and abilities of studying a certain fields, either some of the fields of study [may be] too hard for these students and they later find themselves to be struggling, or they feel no interests and commitment in the study. In either case, they are not likely to be successful students in their years in school, and thus would hardly be successful employees when they enter the job market. In such cases, even if they choose the so-called lucrative careers, they may not be well paid, or in worse case could not even find a job. Even if they do find a nice job, they may still hardly experience self-fulfillment when doing things they are not committed to.

Some may argue that this policy can help the universities to cultivating some more successful and financially more affluent alumni, and thus would get more donations from the alumni. Apparently the colleges and universities will benefit from the increased alumni donation and overall revenue in every aspect. However, it should also be pointed out that encouraging students to pursue “lucrative careers” in spite of [with no regard to] their own interests and talents may results in reduced satisfaction over their years in school. In such case, the alumni will be more reluctant when considering donating, especially those who choose the “lucrative careers” but still did not find a good job or get decent incomes, or those who do not enjoy these careers. As a result, the colleges and universities would not receive donations from these alumni. And the number of which [unhappy alumni] may be increased by adopting the policy.

in spite of- with no regard to
and the number of which 句子结构

In conclusion, I completely disagree with the statement. Although it may be grounded on some reasonable consideration, I think if [it] would be hard for the institutions to find such careers at the first place, and students may not be happy when they are advised to choose careers that are not for them. Some people may argue that donations to the institutions may be increased by increasing numbers of successful alumni, but the satisfaction of them may be decreased.

7月16日 Argument 87 范文模仿

In a study of the reading habits of Waymarsh citizens conducted by the University of Waymarsh, most respondents said they preferred literary classics as reading material. However, a second study conducted by the same researchers found that the type of book most frequently checked out of each of the public libraries in Waymarsh was the mystery novel. Therefore, it can be concluded that the respondents in the first study had misrepresented their reading preferences.

Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.

25分钟。30分钟时检查到了倒数第二段。

In this study, the first survey showed that Waymarsh citizens reported that they preferred to read literary classics while the following study found that mystery novels were mostly frequently checked out from the Waymarsh public libraries. Thus this paragraph argues that this inconsistency between the two results is due to the fact that the respondents in the first study had misrepresented their reading preferences. However, there are a few hidden or stated assumptions about the collection and circulation of the library books, the reading habits of Waymarsh people, and about the design of the first survey.

the paragraph- the passage 选词

To begin with, the argument assumes that more mystery novels to be checked out means people actually prefer reading mystery novels than any other type of readings. However, it is possible that there are large numbers of mystery novels available in these libraries but not that many literary classics available in the libraries. Or, the libraries do have large numbers of literary classics, but most of them can only be used in the libraries and only a few of them can be checked out. Another possibility is that people would prefer to read literary classics in the quiet reading rooms in the libraries, and prefer checking out the mystery novels and read them at home or somewhere else. In any of these cases, people may read literary classics more than mystery novels, but just did not check them out from the libraries.

argument assume搭配 可以查一下COCA
however这句后面要加一句 所以如何
注意题目的要求是what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted
你在这段的后半段要明确的讨论假设不对的后果是什么

Another unstated assumption is that, people in Waymarsh acquire and read books from only the public libraries. Actually, it is possible that there are large numbers of literary classics available in some small private libraries, and people would read and/or check out these books from there. Or they may purchase literary classics in the books stores, from online stores, or even download e-books from online because many old literary classics are free to access on the Internet. In any of these cases, people do prefer reading literary classics and do read them a lot, but just choose to not obtain these books from the public libraries. When it comes to mystery novels, they would borrow the books from public libraries instead of purchasing such books.

问题同上 总的来说写的不错

Finally, the argument assumes that the first survey is reliable and equally represented the opinions of different groups of people in Waymarsh. However, the survey could be taken in the universities, where there is a higher percentage of literary classics fans compared to the average level Waymarsh people. Or people read literary classics in the reading rooms and check out mystery novels, and the survey took place in reading rooms and surveyed mainly people who prefer literary classics than other types of readings. Or there might be only limited types of readings asked in the survey, and the researchers did not even provide “mystery novels” as a choice; or mystery novels was categorized into another group like “imaginary literature” so did not get analyzed. In any of these cases, the respondents did not misrepresented their preferences, but some opinions are underrepresented in the survey.

还是要注意hedging
argument基本都是讨论可能发生的情况 因此不应该用过去时

In conclusion, there are several stated or unstated assumptions in the argument, about the collection and circulation books in the Waymarsh public libraries, the reading habits of Waymarsh people, and about the survey design. If these assumptions are proved to be unwarranted, the conclusion and the reasoning on which it based may not hold true.
