Argument 34) The vice president of human resources at Climpson Industries sent the following recommendation to the company's president.
"In an effort to improve our employees' productivity, we should implement electronic monitoring of employees' Internet use from their workstations. Employees who use the Internet from their workstations need to be identified and punished if we are to reduce the number of work hours spent on personal or recreational activities, such as shopping or playing games. By installing software to detect employees' Internet use on company computers, we can prevent employees from wasting time, foster a better work ethic at Climpson, and improve our overall profits. "
"Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted."

According to the vice president of human resources, the Climpson Industrious should implement electronic monitoring to detect their employees' Internet use on company computers and to improve overall profits of Climpson. However, the reasons of the suggestions were ill prepared owing to some unsupportive assumptions underlying the vice president's premise. There are the relationship of employees' productivity and the practice of implementing electronic monitoring; the workers' reactions of the practice and the actual profits the Industrious would get.

In the first place, the vice president assumed that the employees' productivity could be enhanced by monitoring their employees' Internet use from their workstations. Nevertheless, the worker might feel frustrate about this practice and thus their productivity might be weaken by this policy. What's more, even though implementing monitoring devices could enhance their employees' productivity, this practice might not the only one choice to improve their workers' efficiency. Since this Industries could improve the salaries and boons to encourage and prize those workers who make great contributions to the Industrious and thus enhance their productivity.

In the second place, the vice president assumed that the workers would decrease the work hours spent on personal or recreational activities and would not rebel or resign from the Climpson owing the implement of electronic monitoring. However, since surfing the Internet on computer is not the only one way of personal or recreational activities, the workers today could do such activities on their smart phones, like IPhones. Therefore, the electronic monitoring devices would be furtive. What's more, the workers might feel despair of this practice and refuse to implement such a device on their computer, and there would be also a violent demonstration around the corner. Therefore, the workers' productivities could be backfired by this policy.

Finally, the vice president assumed that the cost of implementing such electronic monitoring devices would outweigh the cost of employees' despair of the company and the resignations of some major workers. However, this assumption might not work at all. Since many employees might feel offend by the practice and resign from the Industrious, and thus the company's conditions would be further deteriorated by the policy of implementing such electronic monitoring systems. What's more, those devices could be much expansive, and thus the company could get no profits after weighing the costs and benefits of this practice. Actually, the company could take good advantage of this money to prize workers who make great productivities to this company.

In conclusion, the company's president of Climpson Industries should reconsider the suggestion of the vice president to implement electronic monitoring to detect their employees' Internet use. Since this suggestion could be counterproductive.

argument 62 第二次修改:

In the argument, the director of the large group of hospitals concluded that they should supply UltraClean at all hand-washing stations throughout their hospital system. However, the logic of his assumptions is unwarranted because of his unsupported assumptions, which includes that the transference of laboratory study to clinical use; the UltraClean is the main cause of the reported significantly fewer cases of patient infection; the Ultraclean could prevent serious patient infections in all working stations.

In the first place, the director assumed that the laboratory results could apply to clinical stations, which means that the concentrated solution of UltraClean could also produce a 40 percent greater reduction in the bacteria population when using at the hospital. However, the assumption might not be supported by the fact that the conditions in the laboratory are different from those clinical stations. For example, when testing in the laboratory, the condensed UltraClean might indeed produce a 40-percent reduction in the bacteria population; however, when using at the hospital, the patients and doctors there might not comply the instructions of the UltraClean and they might dilute the UltraClean, and thus this bactericide might not work well in the real clinical sites.

What's more, the director assumed that the concentrated solution of UltraClean was the only factor that is responsible for the beneficial effects of the reported significantly fewer cases of patient infection. However, this assumption is unsupported and needs to be scrutinized thoroughly. Since there were many other causes which could lead to the fewer cases of patient infection. For example, maybe it is the clean environment of the hospital or the better facilities in the hospital or simply the state-of-art skills of the doctor in the hospital that contribute to the fewer cases of patient infection rather the implementation of the concentrated solution of UltraClean.

Finally, the director assumes that the Ultraclean could prevent serious patient infections in all working stations. However, this assumption needs to be critically scrutinized by further tests. For example, even though we admit the fact that the UltraClean produced a 40 percent greater reduction in the bacteria population than did the liquid hand soaps, however, we did not know whether the extra bacteria population were responsible for the serious infection of a patient. If not, the 40 percent greater reduction in the bacteria population would be furtive in fighting for the serious infection. What’s more, since there are millions of bacteria in our body, the director should clarify which kinds of bacteria could seriously infect a patient and whether the UltraClean could annihilate them.

In conclusion, without clarifying those assumptions above, the director might not too hasty to apply that UltraClean in all work sites of the hospital.
