Issue 42: Because learning is not a solitary activity but one that requires collaboration among people, students of all ages will benefit academically if they work frequently in groups.
In the course of human events, it's continuous learning that makes man progress and generates the civilized society evolved. Even when our life trip terminates one day does learning take a pause for a second. Thus here we're facing a critical problem that deserves each of us deliberative thinking: which counts most in the process of learning, collaboration among people or a solitary activity?
For years, severe debate over the issue has been lasting. Some argue that learning is the one that necessitates collaboration rather than an independent activity. Absolutely, the claimer insightfully observes the significance that collaboration attaches to the voyage in the knowledge ocean. Suppose you’re the one who leaves the crew behind, how can you notice every urgent situation at any time? And how can you fight for the horrible storm in the indefinite sea alone? And whom you share with happiness and sadness during the lonely days? Even you become a navigation specialist finally, can you survive without communication, without friends who gives you encouragement. The answer is negative with no question.
Similarly, it’s the collaboration that nurtures teamwork spirit; it’s the team spirit that during the process of learning helps us bear confidence and courage; it’s the confidence and courage that inspire us to confront and to resolve the difficulties of today and in the future. Consider Karl Marx, one of the greatest Political Philosophers in the last century, whose most influential work Das Kapital was drawn a lot from the revolutionary experiences with his companions in various worker groups. Also thanks to his life long friend, Engels, who promotes Marx’s inspiration of many important thoughts and moreover completed the last two volumes of Das Kapital. It’s true that learning in groups is not only inspiring, but also academically beneficial.
However, as we admit that the vital role collaboration plays in the process of learning, does it mean independent working is useless? Or precisely, we may ask: are they contradictory to each other? Contrariwise, it’s independent work and collaboration together that contribute to the knowledge learning. Without independent thinking and self-hard work, collaboration would become water without a source. Obviously, though we come into a group or an organization, still as an individual in nature, which means each member of the group has to attributes his or her own comprehension of the knowledge after critical and creative consideration. If everyone intends to take free ride, taking other member’s opinions as his/her own, there will be no more steps the group can move forward. Let’s take an experiment for example: most students complete their homework by copying top students’ in the class instead of by their independent jobs. After some time, it shows that the top students reluctantly go on doing homework because there is no academic communication, no interesting and inspiring aura that drives them going further. Therefore, it’s also true that without individual hard work, the knowledge structure would be corrupted in the end, no matter in a group or in a community.
During the voyage of knowledge learning, the relationship of independent hard work and collaboration is like the relationship between steering and rowing. Without independent comprehension, the collaboration would miss the direction; without closed collaboration, the individual work would lose energy to row. But once they are blended, the exploiture of navigation would reach the gorgeous knowledge beach. |
