To be an effective leader, a public official must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards.

Whether successful leadership requires that a leader follow the highest ethical and moral standards is a subject of extensive and intensive study. I agree insofar that abiding by the standards are prerequisites for an effective leadership. At some point, however, I think that the moral standards should not take precedence over other factors that will account for an outstanding leadership.

To begin with, establishing a sound ethical and moral standard is the first and foremost step that one devotes himself or herself to an official. Only by keeping to high requirements of both ethics and morals can one truly promote self-development and win the respect of one's followers. The image brings immediately to mind is Chou En-Lai, former premier of PRC. Chou, lived a simple life with no offspring himself, yet cherished all the Chinese young boys and girls saying that they are all his children. He dedicated all his energy to the service for his people. No wonder that the whole nation plunged into grave sorrow at the news of his death. Even the UN lowered the flag to honor such a prominent leader. Consider also the notable figures such as Gandhi and Martin Luther King, whom few would disagree were eminently successful in leading others to practice the high ethical and moral standards which they advocated.  As Socratic has once taught us: know yourself. Self-awareness is by no means of great importance as well as  necessity.

Furthermore, without ethical and moral standards, a leader is likely to slump into endless personal desire, which may finally smash the individual. Pascal has said in all seriousness that the human being is like a weak reed. A leader of no strong ethical and moral guidelines probably fails to resist various kinds of lures or cravings, entailing which a series of trespassing of the traditional observed norms. Take Hitler and Mussolini for example, egregious violators of public morality, ultimately forfeited their leadership as a result of the immoral means by which they obtained or wielded their power. As a matter of fact, rarely can we name one successful leader whose leadership was predicated on the advocacy of patently unethical or immoral behavior.

While admitting the maintenance of ethical and moral standards as prerequisites is one thing, complying with the standards as the highest criterion is another. A public official's job is to build, maintain, and expand the wealth, prosperity and political influence of his nation, district, county, state or what have you. This is his or her primary concern. Bill Clinton, though having an improper sexual relationship with Monica Lewinsky, maintained extraordinarily high approval ratings for the job he was doing as president. Gradually we have learned to distinguish between an official's public self and their private selves, evaluating each independently. Many more times than you and I would like to think, realizing political goals require them to make choices that are outside the bounds of morality.

In conclusion, no socially important action is without a positive or negative moral dimension. The boundaries between the spheres of morality and politics are very flexible. The interaction between them depends on one's acting in accordance with another.
