University of Geneva Msc in Statistics

我实在不知道该不该去，现在的工作也还不错，但是一直觉得自己非科班而且学的统计计算机课程很琐碎不系统感觉和同行之间差距很大，而且不知道没有相关背景会不会以后工作成为瓶颈，一直有一种危机感。

加之平时上班很累自学很痛苦，但又不知是否值得脱产一年。自己一路从文科转理科也就是因为对数理统计的热爱和对财务金融的厌恶。而且日内瓦大学也不是很了解。被苏黎世联邦理工(ETHz)、苏黎世大学(UZH)、慕尼黑都拒了。

I actually considered that option very seriously, but after some research about the webiste for part-time CS or Stats programs, I found the courses are not very satisfactory (both superficial and expensive). Also, since last year, part time students also have to take tests in politics, computer science and mathematics, I might have to spend many time on exams I am not familiar with. It is an option, but definitely a tiring and not very worthy one.

Also, could you tell me how likely is it to secure a job and get the work permit as a non-EU graduates in fields like stats/econometrics/CS? Thanks!

Thanks. Im currently back adn working in Shanghai. What about working in Switzerland? I heard its really hard to get the work permit as a master.

be prepared to fight for a job in France or Germany if you want to stay in Europe

Yes it's 1.5 years. But I can waive 5 courses (30 ECTS) from the previous ones learned at UofT. I might still end up studying for 1.5 years tho since I wanna take more courses in computer science which I think will be useful. It seems that there is no upper limit of the number of courses taken for each semester as long as it is available; I used to take 60 equivalent ECTS at UofT, that would not be an issue if you arranged your schedule well.

The biggest concern surely is the working situation in Switzerland and also my poor French skill, so I might prepare for going back to Shanghai and use the network here. (don't wanna work in France, heard from my old classmates that they are even earning less than in Shanghai)

1. I guess you get the core part of the MSc waived (except the thesis). Sound nice

2. Taking CS course out of the major requirement alongside is a excellent idea. I guess they dont limit the number of ECTS you can have each semester. but......have you checked that if the CS course that is relevant to you (e.g. algorithm, machine learning and etc.....) are available in English or not yet? you have to know that their msc in computer science is in French and English, so course availability is a big concern.

The most recent trend of data analytics show that the market care more about application, computation, forecasting, rather than theory and assumption, which are field that those machine learning stuffs in CS are doing way better than those mathematical statistics in stat department.........so checking availability of CS stuff is very important.

3. I dont think you have to concern too much about the working visa issue, given 99% likely you wont get a visa there...

我覺得你應該考慮一邊hold著這個offer, 一邊再申某些歐陸工程學校的data sci master....(看過你前帖的課表......應該有2nd major吧, 這樣對數理工程本科背景的要求也符合了. e.g. what if TU Munich DS, Berlin MS stat (but this one seems to be in Deutsche), 又或者是EPFL DS之類...)

不知道lz为什么会选统计读。个人愚见，纯数理统计可能会在未来10年里逐渐消失，取而代之的是data science， AI， ML 等等。

如果楼主一定执意要转CS的话，UK有很多这种硕士，很多名校都有， 像IC， UCL， Bristol等等。google下面这个：
Conversion master computing site:.ac.uk
但是UK的就业市场最近对于外国人非常不友好。

一般Master都是给没有工作经验的人准备。lz已经在data analytics行业工作了，没有必要再要个学位啦。如果为了学习，可以读个bootcamp，实用多了。大学的课程80%都是浪费时间的。而且统计知识DS，AI和ML的一个小小的一块罢了，而且很有诸多不同之处，没有必要为了吃根香肠去养头猪吧。

我个人觉得比利时Gent大学的master marketing analysis特别适合lz，去看看吧。

另外爱丁堡大学还有远处的DS master，1万镑左右，还没考试，特别适合要搞学位的人士。

如果想要移民欧洲的话，瑞士的确是下下之选。瑞士每年有工作许可的固定名额的，而且是给欧盟公民优先的。最易找工作的地方，现在是荷兰，经济不错，对移民也比较开放，唯一缺点是税高而且工资特别平均，大家都一样。可以看看荷兰的DS，business analytics master。比如Vrije University Amsterdam, MSc in BA, 学校好，地理位置更加，出来找个银行的什么risk modelling之类的没啥大问题。

1. don't agree at all that mathematical statistics will disappear.
if you are talking about professional master, it can be the case...
but academic researcher still need to proof the properties of various data analytical method, e.g. if they are consistent, if they are XXX and etc.

2. data science is kind of mixture between computer science, and thus I think it is fine to do that in either department, as long as the course and professor are there.

3. "大学的课程80%都是浪费时间的" <-- I guess you didn't have a science and engineering major, or you are not working in a technical field. This % shoule be normally much lower in STEM fields, especially one select the right course. (well one never know which tools are exactly useful in their future jobs....and has to count this in)
Of course, I agree that a full time master maybe too costly. Getting a part-time / online one maybe a better idea if OP dont plan to relocate. but OP need a master title in this field given OP don't have that before. A title make moving around within the industry much easier (don't need to explain background every time, as people tend to believe that a related degree = somehow solid background and standardized training, while working experience is something not that clear)

4. I don't think it is a good idea to read a BA master (actually DS one is not too good too) for fighting for a risk modelling role in a bank. The training that dont have a board coverage overs topic in risk (I can only think of credit risk stuffs in commercial banks....) If one want to get a risk role in bank, it will be better to get a quantitative finance one.
but of course a BA/DS master is a good one for whatever business data stuffs.

很感谢你的意见，不过有些观点不能苟同哦。

纯数理统计是不可能消失的，无论是科技公司比如谷歌还是像我们公司（医药、制造类）背后的核心建模人物永远是统计学家和计算机怪才。BA只是表面的应用，是可以集训的，数理思维不是一天就训练得出的，而且这种思维（或许就是你说的那80%“没用”的课）对你工作、生活受益匪浅。

统计只是BA，DS的一个分支？我觉得首先它们不存在子集和母集的关系。真的要牵强的认为存在，也应该是倒过来才对。举个例子，数据挖掘的经典教材（比如Murphy的那本）那就是在学统计啊，不是入门级的python，或tableau这些数据分析工具集训个几天就能学会的啊，再说classification cluster neural network NLP等等等等不都是基于统计理论嘛。

BA的录取条件相对统计和计算机较为低（其实我录取了好些BA，我只想用来测测自己的实力几何能申上些啥，但我不会去读BA）因为的确它不会教那些数据挖掘类的理论课程，即使是算法或数据结构，也最多只是讲些皮毛以及业界最为常用的。其实这也没啥不好，读书的确很大程度就是为了就业嘛，但是你很有可能只能做个analyst或“码农“”，而不是真正的数据科学家或程序员。

感谢你推荐了一些英国学校（好些估计也申不上），但我其实比较喜欢瑞士教学那种“变态”严谨的态度。

以上也只是一家之言啦，不过我们的老板招聘时偏好统计硕博士和计算机博士哦（可能也因为我们部门属于研究部门吧）
