------题目------
An individual's greatness cannot be judged objectively by his or her contemporaries; the most objective evaluators of a person's greatness are people who belong to a later time.
------正文------
The speaker claims that it is people who belong to a later time that can evaluate an individual's greatness objectively rather than their contemporaries. Critics may say the contemporaries hold more objective attitude toward such great people. However, in my point of view, the most objective evaluation of an individual's greatness results from their descendant people who hold a more fair attitude.
Admittedly, some individuals' greatness can also be admitted in their time. The Nobel Prize every year can be a good example. Each year, the Nobel Prize which is honored the greatest academic glory in the world is granted to the scientists who have great attribution to the such fields as Economy, Peace, Literature, Medicine, Physics. It is undoubted that the people who is honored with such prize is highly evaluated by his/her contemporaries. The evaluation can also be seen in other fields besides research. Take beauty competition for an example. Miss globe competition was just held in Sanya China, the last winner was regarded to be of both beauty and wisdom, she was evaluated to be the number one of all the competitors by the judgers and audiences---her contemporaries. However, we cannot draw a conclusion that the contemporaries can judge objectively on an individual's greatness, for there were many exceptions in the history of human.
Many genius in the history of human became of titters or even persecution despite their outstanding greatness. Van gogh, regarded as a talent on painting nowadays, who had created many invaluable paintings such as Sunflowers and Starry Night, ended his life in suicide after struggling with depression and poverty. As the representative of the postimpressionist, he was distained and ignored by the people of his time, his painting was considered to be worthless. He was reevaluated objectively many years later after his death. Another example is Copernicus who assumed that we earth as well as other planets spinned around the sun rather than vice versa, that Ptolemaic claimed. But a period after his death, this theory was not accepted, the authorities of that time even sentenced 布鲁诺 who carried such belief firmly to stalk. Of course, we all know that Copernicus was right. Hence from the examples above we conclude that the contemporaries cannot always give objectively and correctively judgment.
What cause the fallacious evaluation? Many reasons result in this, I am afraid. First, also the most crucial, it is the greatness of the genius that go beyond the contemporaries' understanding that make them have a false evaluation. When Einstein generalized into the general theory of relativity, nearly no one in the world can understand. It is not surprising that it was his explanation of the photoelectric effect that made him get Nobel Prize of physics in 1921 rather than the theory of relativity although the latter seems much more valuable. Last but not least, many inventions were not brought into play until many years later, so the greatness was ignored naturally at that time.
To sum up, from the reasons mentioned above, it is comfortable for me to draw a conclusion that in order to attain a more objective evaluation on the greatness of people, it is more rational to rely on the people's judgment who belong to a later time.
b1. admittedly, 同时代的人也会做出精彩的评价。各种奖项就是对个人成功的承认。但我们必须看到历史上很多天才是在其死后很多年才被人们承认,而遭受了同时代人的嘲笑甚至迫害。
b2.van gogh;Copernicus
