求问经济数学的一个问题

小弟现就读香港Top3经济系 想要申请ECON Mphil 或者 PhD，因此一直对所需的数学背景有一定疑问。本校经济系自己开了一门 数理经济学导论，简介如下：
1. Learn basic tools in mathematical analysis and their applications to mathematical economics. 2. Learn formal mathematical reasoning, and how to read and write proofs. 3. Learn mathematical tools that are widely used in economic theory, such as logic, sets, functions, sequences, continuity, open sets, closed sets, compact sets, maximum existence theorem, separating hyperplanes, and fixed points. 4. Learn basic results in mathematical economics, such as preference, utility, demand, general equilibrium, Pareto optimality. 5. Improve ability of reading academic papers in economic theory.
Syllabus：1.        Logic and Proofs 2.        Sets and Functions 3.        Preference and Utility 4.        Sequence, Limit, Continuity 5.        Existence of Utility Representation 6.        Compact Set and Maximizer Existence 7. Consumer Demand 8.        Exchange Economy 9.        Separating Hyperplanes and Two Welfare Theorems 10.        Fixed Points and Existence of Competitive Equilibrium。
不知在申请过程中有多大的用途？还需要上哪些课？

想讀econ graduate school的, 建議趁早去拿個math, stat 的minor.

econ department的math for economist, mathematical econ course是很有用, 但遠遠不夠用的.

P.S. 你那個是BSSc (hons) 吧? year 3 了?
如果你之前還沒有minor math stat的打算, 希望你現在還只是year 2了........
單單是3150, 4110, 4120 不夠用的.......

多谢学长！现在确实是大二。之前和Prof Mok聊起，他说经济学对数学比对统计的要求高？如果想要做Macro的话minor数学还是统计学比较好呢？

大二的話, 時間多的是, 就both 吧........(二揀一的話當然maths優先)

get some numerical method, optimization, a bit differential equation and stochastic in maths, (and analysis......小心grade)
and study things like multivariate stat, inference in statistics
sounds a good combination.

major concentration我猜你是選了econ theory和data analytics的吧.....

比较可惜。。。我选的是GLEF，major有好多华而不实的课。。。想要毕业估计只能选一个stat和econ theory作为minor了TAT

1. 從經濟研究和升學角度看, GLEF是完全沒用........一個連intermediate micro / macro都不是major study scheme內的除了名字名是完全沒用的. 比較solid的econ master基本都要intermediate economics的.
所以別被名字騙了.  Thats is not a bsc in econ and fina,  thats a bba in econ and fina. Harsh 一點說，根本不能算是econ 主修，只能算business econ (國際慣例是，econ 主修都一定會core intermediate micro macro 的)

2. 所以, 如果你是打算走和課程安排的路(就業), 要去做research方向的工作的話, 就必須靠自己.......這個就是說你不能讀完了畢業所需的學分就收工, 而需要每個學期overload as much as possible (i.e. 6 or 7 courses per semester, and get more than 123 while graduate).
summer 沒internship / RA 的話可以考慮LSE summer school, 一次過把intermediate micro / macro / econometric + real analysis搞定

3. 不夠時間下, 最優先minor math, 之後再是advanced econ, stat排第三.
所以建議minor math+econ.

P.S. coursework will be very useful:
major elective (econ): forecasting (4120)
major elective (fina): empirical finance, intermediate fina theory (4130, 4160)
econ: intermediate micro, macro are must (3011, 3021)
math: multivariate calculus,  linear algebra is a must (2010, 1030),  i guess you had them already
stat:  calculus and proof based prob and stat, important, but i guess you didnt have time for them (2001, 2006)

rest are in order of importance from my point of view:
math: mathematical and real analysis (if you are not afraid of GPA issue), optimization, stochastic, differential eqn, numerical analysis (2050+2060 / 2055, 4050, 4230, 4250, 3270, 3230)
econ: adv micro, adv macro, mathematical econ (4010, 4020, 4110)
stat: inference, multivariate (4003, 4002)
