hardly≈not, hardly A but B, 也就是 not A but B了? 我是这样理解的emm
not A but B意思是不是...而是,一般都是固定搭配,A和B是反向,但是说的是同一种属性,not new but old说的是新旧的问题,这里后面已经说的是另外一个属性,空格动词的主体是其他人,不是thesis。
或者,把不是...而是的意思带进去,不是新的,而是不被怎么样,是不是感觉句子都不通。
这里的but明显是个转折,而not...but是把一个事情反着说,再正着说,说来说去都是一个事情。
