------题目------
To truly understand your own culture—no matter how you define it—requires personal knowledge of at least one other culture, one that is distinctly different from your own.
------正文------
The speaker claims that it is necessary for us to know at least one other obviously different culture if we want to truly understand our own culture. There is on doubt that any culture can hardly originate and development solely, so I agree with this claim insofar that we must know at least one other culture which may not distinctly different from our own one.
To begin with, it is a fact that we do not even feel existence of our own culture until we meet another culture. Only through this can we actually feel the atmosphere of our own culture. A Chinese boy, who use chop sticks, cannot image that people on the other side of the world eat by forks and knives before he realize the western culture. He may never think why Chinese use chop sticks to eat. He was just taught to do so and everyone around him use chop sticks as he do. Only contact other cultures can he feel that he is in the orient culture. These above illustrate that we can feel every aspects of our own culture through other ones, which is the first step to truly understand our own culture.
In addition, to truly understand our own culture means not only know what it is like now, but also how it does come into being, through which we can have a deeper understanding of our own culture. Actually, each culture is changing incessant, and not only inherits from previous, but also is affected by other cultures. For instance, Japanese culture is in large part affected by Chinese's, especially the thinking of Confucius, which plays a considerable role in the society of Japan. Since the Confucianism is originated from china, it is necessary for a Japanese man who is studying his own culture to access knowledge about Chinese culture. Therefore, learning other cultures can help us now the origination and development of our own culture, which is conductive to promote our understanding.
Furthermore, knowing other cultures is helpful to understand the advantages and disadvantages of our own culture. Then we can preserve what is good, and improve what is not good. For example, Chinese have not had the idea of democracy for thousands of years. But at the period of 1980--1999, the whole country is impacted by the democratic system of U.S.A. Having had sense of the benefits of this system in development, Chinese people have had more and more intense sense of democracy and the government also has improved this kind of system constantly. Only through incessant reform can a country or a nation be more powerful. Therefore the best way to achieve it is to know diverse cultures.
However, when there exists serious conflicts between cultures, it is not the case. I can hardly image what will happen when a Israelite had studied the culture of Arabia. Maybe there is nothing to help but more and more enmity. So it is unnecessary to know distinctly different culture for truly understanding of our own culture.
In conclusion, while obviously different cultures may not be conductive for us to understand our own culture, it is on doubt that at least one other culture is necessary. |
