First of all, I tried to get the information about who are the nice professors of the department. who had funding, who would probablly need some master students to work for his project. Then I wrote email to the one I like mostly. My GRE verbal score is very very low. But I have high GPA and not bad working experience. I told the professor that I'm interested in his research erea, and want to study from him blah, blah. At very beginning, he told me he did not have funning and opening for me. so I was a little disappointed. However, after some weeks, he told me he had an opening, but since my verbal score is low, he wanted to talk with me first. So I went to his office and talked with him. He asked me some general questions, and asked the project coordinator to ask me some java questions. After that, he thought although my verbal is low, but he has no problem when commnunicating with me. I also told him I could work for him as a volunteer, since I just want to do something. He thought it was unfair to me, because he could not pay for me before I got F1 status. I told him it is ok, and I do not care about the payment, blahblah. In sum, I just showed him how eager I wanted to study and work. Then he allowed it.
After the talk, I wrote an email to the committee chair about this. Then the committee chair asked the professor some information about me. The professor told him that he thought I could finish the master program, although my verbal is low. Then I got my admission.
However, I did not get offer at that time, since the offer to new international students should be one year, but the professor was not sure if he could get funding in spring. After I worked for 4 months, the project coordinator is really satisfied with what I had done. So the professor is happy, and gave me a one-year offer at the beginning of the fall semester.
So, try to contact with professors, and do not be shy. Show them your strength, and let them know you are good. |
