183 As we acquire more knowledge, things do not become more comprehensible, but more complex and more mysterious.
Are things become more complex and mysterious rather than comprehensive when we acquire more knowledge, as the speaker claims? In my view the two are not mutually exclusive. In fact, natural science and social science not only help people learn more about the world and make things seem comprehensible, but also inspire our curiosity and arouse our desire to search unknown areas, which might seem complex and mysterious for us.
Generally speaking, there is no doubt that many things which seemed puzzled for our ancestors are so easy for people to understand nowadays in that accumulated knowledge helps problems and theories to be expressed clearly and lucidly. For instance, with the basic knowledge of genetics, people now stop wondering why children resemble their parents rather than other people; with mastery of fundamental knowledge of medical science, disease such as diarrhea, hepatitis, measles, are not seem so horrible and mysterious as before. In a word, knowledge solves so many problems that make the world, in our eyes, more understandable and more welcomed. In this sense, the speaker’s statement that things do not become more comprehensible is groundless.
Nevertheless, it should be admitted that many new problems and puzzles are still confusing us. When it comes to the scientific field, more and more unsolved mysteries are waiting to be discovered: such as the vaccine of AIDS, the theory of organ transplant, many pathogen of illness are still unclear, which prevent us from saving more lives. No matter how knowledgeable we are, we should realize that the knowledge we acquire are so limited that can hardly explain or solve most troubles we meet. Furthermore, in the field of society, the problems are even more complex for the reason of historical problems and the process of globalization. A case in point is the combat between Israel and Palestine, which lasts for more than half a century. Why? To ask this complicated question, we should take into account lots of factors such as the oil price of Middle East, the new world pattern after the World War Second, and the relationship between Israel and American etc. Therefore, we should realize the complex and mysterious questions always surround us, encouraging us to find new method to solve them.(这段写了知识多了但是还是有很多没有能够解决的问题,与第一段内容相反,楼主如果用假设然后反驳的方式可能会更好,即:现说明知识多了本应如何解决以上的问题,但事实上并没有解决这些问题,反而世界更加复杂了)
In fact, as the revolution of human beings, it is inevitable to avoid meeting more unexplained and intricate problems in that it is just by acquiring more knowledge that people gain more ability and have more chance to attach to new questions, which are both complex and mysterious at first glance. If we uncover them, they seem so much easier to understand, that is to say, more comprehensible. If not, they might still keep secret. Let’s compare the known part of the world to the space within a circle; the unknown part of the world around the circle grows as the circle of our knowledge expands. As Larry, one of the philosophy professors in our university once put, (and I paraphrase) "The more knowledge people have, the more mysterious fields they would like to search.” What he said aptly illustrates that with more knowledge, many old problems become comprehensive, while at the same time, we face more complex and mysterious challenges.(这段话是写上一段现象存在的原因么? 但好像还是在说现象,尤其是后面的引用,最好用到上一段)
In conclusion, I essentially hold the opinion that, by accumulating more knowledge, people can not only make what has been inexplicable in the past, more easily to understand, but also have to face the incessant complex and mysterious problems. In the final analysis, I would like to clarify that it is not because the knowledge itself, but rather the desire to explore untouched fields that make things become more complex and mysterious. |
