We can usually learn much more from people whose views we share than from people whose views contradict our own; disagreement can cause stress and inhibit learning.

It seems as if we can learn much more from people who share our own views, but why did ancient philosophers always debate on many issues in many different fields? It may be because contradicting views is more beneficial than shared views. Although some people may hold the opinion that disagreement can cause uncomfortable and may result in conflicts if the participants do not refrain themselves from being angry, we cannot take a blind eye on the advantages of contradicting views.

For one thing,contradicting views may provide us with alternative perspectives to problems, which is key in a multicultural world. As the proverb goes, every coin has two sides. We people sometimes have to admit that we are shortsighted, that is to say when we philosophize a difficult problem, we may only focus on one facet. Our views, therefore, maybe unilateral and to some extend not right. For example, in the field of business, as we know, a discrepancy occurs in the work is a result of the interacting of multiple factors. Contradiction views can help us to make out all the causes and then generate a good solution. In addition, contradicting views, especially those from different cultural contexts, are so valuable for us to outlook the world from a brandnew scope.

For another, contradicting views can help us see the flaws of our own point of view and enable us to improve our understanding. Contradicting views can deepen our thought by the way of discussing. The lawyers on the court are able to find out the weakness in their own words through counterparts' offence and then find a way to defend. In China, there is an emporer named Li Shimin in Tang Dinasty who eagered his ministers to expicit their different opinions so as to remind him avoiding mistakes.

Shared views may be more pleasant to listen than contradicting views. However, people who share our view may have nothing new to contribute, while contradicting can spark new ideas. That is why we should value contradicting views as a treasure.
