At various times in the geological past, many species have become extinct as a result of natural, rather than human, processes. Thus, there is no justification for society to make extraordinary efforts, especially at a great cost in money and jobs, to save endangered species.

As a report from IUCN listed: till 2003, there had been 12259 species in severe danger, 762 had already died out, and 58 remained alive only in artificial environment. The number may be more surprising now, since the preservation, compared with the destruction, are so tiny and far from enough. Human faults rather than natural selection has sped up the extinctions to such an extent that unless we take effective measures, we would face a danger that one day only human beings are living on the earth.

To begin with, since a myriad of species have been killed out along with human development, we should take responsibility for our crimes. With the technological advancement, modern wars and industrial pollutions have caused enormous disasters to the animals and plants, previously living peacefully and happily. And vicious people, who arbitrarily hunt the rare animals like elephants, tigers and gazelles to gain high profits, make further contribution to the decrease of species. In addition, the excessive and blind exploitation of biological resources exacerbates the terrible environment and destroys the balance in nature. As we all know, the natural elimination cannot lead to unbalance in ecosystem. Thus, we cannot seek groundless excuse like this to defend our ungraceful behaviors. The fact is, as some experts have pointed out, human alone are producing the sixth extinction of creatures. It is predicted that, if such a tendency remains out of control, at the end of this century, the species would decrease by 15 to 20 percent, and the speed of extinction would add up to one species disappearing per hour.

There is a necessity for us to protect the endangered species, not only because the ever-increasing annihilation calls for more attention to such an action, but also for the reason that we cannot live without other creatures. If all the animals and plants died out, human beings would also follow the fate of them. After all, human, unlike plants, are not able to live on sunshine, air, water and minerals through photosynthesis and have an absolute dependence on other creatures. Then is it enough for us to protect no more than those providing foods and other necessities to us? Of course, the answer is no. No creature exists in a vacuum. All the living things remain a part of a complex and interplayed network, called ecosystem. The removal of a single species within an ecosystem can set off a chain reaction affecting many other species. It has been estimated, for example, that a disappearing plant can take with it up to 30 other species, including insects, higher animals, and even other plants. In this way, we cannot be so shortsighted to ignore any species, especially those in great danger.

Furthermore, the potential values of endangered species urge us to do more for them. So far, human have only investigated a small fraction of species and begun to unravel a few of their chemical secrets to determine possible benefits to mankind. No matter how obscure a creature is now, it may be of direct aid to all of us in future. It was "only" a fungus that gave us penicillin, and certain plants have yielded substances used in drugs to treat heart disease, cancer, and a variety of other illnesses. Moreover, the more species were preserved, the more choices we have to improve breeding of crops, poultry and livestock making use of the genes kept. Therefore, the protection of any species will leave our offspring a precious wealth.

On balance, for the survival as well as further development of human, we should dedicate to protection of endangered species by all means, or else, the destiny of them today would be that of us tomorrow.
