Is money spent on research a good investment regardless of the controversial result? I tend to agree with the speaker in that research can always bring about benefit nearly in every aspect of our lives no matter what its results are.

In the first place, research is a kind of activity that helps us to perceive the world around us with a exact view and thus we can behave more adequately. Thus investing in research will benefit us a lot. This is brutally true if we look back on the human history .In ancient times, our ancestors have little knowledge about the nature. They thought it is the arrangement of the God. The superstitious view greatly inhibits their endeavors to try to struggle with the nature. They cannot control the flood of the rivers and regard it is the God's idea. Thus they would not try to make use of it (for instance, to make electricity).However, after careful research, they understand at last the flood is periodic and knows how to take advantage of it. Another good case in point is law of energy conservation. This theory changes our mind of viewing the world, thus we would not make futile effort on fabricating the perpetual working machine. Therefore, money spent on research will change our way of life and thus worthy.

In the second place， even sometimes the result of the research is still in dispute and whether it can bring about tangible profits is still ambiguous， To invest in it remains a good choice, since through the process of research we can also get something that is unknown to us and these ideas has potentiality to serve as sparks in the future research work and in the long run will benefit us .Take the cloning technology for example, it is true that whether colonizing human is adequate, we should still sponsor it, because in this process, we learn more about ourselves and maybe one day this technique can serve as a way of organ transplant. And many people who have suffered from heart disease could probably recover by accepting a cloned heart. Since research  always served to widen our horizons and enlarge our ken, a research that can not bring about visible effect today can probably change the world tomorrow.


One may point out that the nuclear bomb is a great disaster to human kind, then why should we invest in it? However, those who hold this point of view ignored the advantage of the peacefully use of nuclear energy. As we know, about one fifth of the United States’ electricity is made through nuclear reaction. And they forget the disaster rooted in the evil nature of human beings, not the research itself.

In sum, from what we have discussed above ,we come to the conclusion that though sometimes the result of a kind of research are controversial, we should still invest in it as it can in the long run benefit us and bring good to our society
