In my view, I agree with the speaker's assertion that media should report or focus more fully on events and trends which will have the most long-term significance, rather than what is sensational at the moment. It is the responsibility of media to serve our society better and make the public understand our world more clearly.
  Media can reflect what is popular now and what the most people are thinking in the society. It can be the reflection of the public's minds. Nowadays, more and more newspapers and televisions are tending to highlight what is happening in the surrounding of us and what is sensational at the moment. There are a lot of articles about new pop stars, scandals of politicians, or other whimsical events that we had never seen before, all of which have no long-term significance. These articles can reflect that people now pay more attention on just interesting events which will bring them joys and satisfy their curiosity.
  On the other hand, at the same time, the media can affect the society and influence the public's minds. Those views, opinions or events from the media always can affect the public's behavior significantly. In human history, with the help of the media, many advanced minds and famous events can be spread widely or even all over the world, and has made extraordinary progress in the development of society at last. Although these events and trends cannot bring the public joys and satisfy their curiosity, they have great significance to our society in the long-term. They can make the society pay more attention about many serious social problems, such as the quality of people's life, pollution to our environment, or even the human's future, and finally, with discussion of the whole society, solutions to these problems can be made as a result. In this way, media can serve the society better. For instance, during the Reform of China's Economy, at first, people do not understand the new form economy of market economy, for China had established planned economy for about nearly thirty years since its liberation. But with the development of the society, planned economy was not suitable for China's economy, and the administrators decided to choose market economy to replace it. So at that time, there were a large number of articles about the new market economy in newspapers and televisions, which caused the public to discuss this serious problem all over China, and gradually people understood the new economy from the media and accepted it as a right choice in general. At last, China had made great progress in the economy with the help of media.
  To sum up, the media should devote more space and time to the events and trends that have the long-term significance.

简单评一下吧，那个变色工具用起来太费劲。

总的而言字数是够的，内容也很充实。来看看论点。首先认为报道流行事件是意义不大的。关于这个观点，后面的论证没有问题。但是这个论点可以被反驳，比如报纸本来就是要报道最新的新闻，媒体的一大职责就是让公众了解时事。所以一棒子把报道what is happening in the surrounding of us and what is sensational at the moment.打死似乎并不妥当。

我个人认为报道流行时尚到不算罪大恶极，倒是随意传播propaganda是很可耻的，尤其是某些嘴脸喉舌的欺世谎言。当然这不属于这道题讨论的范畴，我只是用来说明报道流行时尚并不是最坏的，人们总是在有些时候需要它们。

后面的论述一开始是非常有力的，尤其这句Although these events and trends cannot bring the public joys and satisfy their curiosity, they have great significance to our society in the long-term. They can make the society pay more attention about many serious social problems, such as the quality of people's life, pollution to our environment, or even the human's future, and finally, with discussion of the whole society, solutions to these problems can be made as a result. 非常好。我觉得整个文章就应该围绕这个内容展开。对于many serious social problems, such as the quality of people's life, pollution to our environment, 可以举具体例子论证，以达到最好效果。

但作者后面的例子非常令人失望。不是说写得不好，而是选得实在不明智。有很多现成的general的例子万无一失的，比如environment，education，human rights都是信手拈来的，但是偏偏选择了这个例子。关于这个例子美国人可不是这么看，国际上的观点你可以参考关于post mao's china的分析，要点并不在development of society，而是一种非正常意识的social change。
