Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively.

In this era of rapid social changing and technological development, more and more schools are encouraging students to bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. In other words, they should question what they are taught in stead of accepting it passively. Some appreciate this idea claim it is a bright and marvelous change. They believe it could help students become truly independent people with a critical thinking. Those who oppose it, on the other hand, assert that could lead to a totally destruction to our present education system, and students could learn no more. As far as I am concerned, I prefer the former one for it seems more convincing in most of the specific situations.
First of all, the validity of the knowledge being taught to students itself is sometimes open to doubt. It may be as the result of several considerable reasons. Time is the sharpest sword that could sweep anything existing away. With the magnificent development of both scientific and cultural realms, even the hardest wall can be untenable in some sense. It is true that when a theory first established, it is often proved to be true. Just consider the quantum theory about light, it could perfectly explain the common phenomenon of reflection and beeline transmittal, but it was not able to make itself convincing about the refraction and diffraction. It is not until the great foundation of photoemission by Albert Einstein could people finally understand the essence of light. So be skeptical about every theory, we could find the out-of-date one at last.
Besides, since our society is full of authorities, an ethos of blind adoration is spreading among the common people. Even divines can make mistakes sometimes. And in some specific cases, the fault is made deliberately for some religious and political intentions. So it is why Galileo climbed up the Leaning Tower and threw tow distinct iron balls downwards in public, and it is why Copernicus was dedicated all his life to astronomy and published his heliocentric theory.
Moreover, a certain skepticism could help students form a scientific way of critical thinking. To get a better understanding of what this means, we have to have to bird's eye view of the responsibilities and obligations that colleges are supposed to have. The colleges and universities are places where students could get an overall view of their cultural perspectives, have their minds trained, acquire the ability of learning things and become capable of critical thinking. So it is the skills they learned rather than the knowledge they acquired that plays a vital part. Only through skepticism can we break the firm cage around us, and only through skepticism can we reach a innovation, and only through skepticism can we actually master the ability of learning.
Admittedly, sometimes skepticism can be not that indispensable. Something is indeed true, something has undergo the test of time, something has been proved to be correct a thousand times, something we called axiom can be totally accepted with our heart and soul. If we still stick to the golden rule “Doubt everything", we will surely come to a dead end are become stubborn ourselves. So when we come across these axioms, just take it easy, and then you will be on the shoulder of the giant.
To sum up, due to the above mentioned the reasons, it is not difficult for us to reach the conclusion that skepticism can be essential and useful in most cases, but what we have to grasp is the spirit of it, and along with the well-established theories, we could finally touch our goals. |
