The history is about what happened in the past. From the study of history, we better understand the past and perceive today. Someone asserts that the study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives. In my opinion, the study of history also has value in other aspects.

It is true that the study of history have value to the extent that it relates to our daily lives. It helps us better perceive what we are facing everyday, nurturing a sense of pride in the fulfillment we human beings achieved in the past and today. From the history of music, for example, we better appreciate “No.9 Symphony” from Beethoven’s weathering adversity; we realize the soul of rock music from the fanaticism to “the Beetles”. From the history of technology, we clearly see the influence the technical advance has brought to our lives, notions and values: from electrical appliance to the Internet crime, from “the Evolution Theory” to human clone. However, is it to say that the study of history only has this value?

History tells us the things in the past—success, failure, profoundness, or meaninglessness—from which we gain ample experience that guide us today and in tomorrow. We can remedy the mistakes, and succeed to the achievement. A history of personal computer can be a case in point. During 70’s to 90’s, America had seen a significant commercial war in the market of personal computer. Wang An, head of a computer corporation is a victor at the beginning of this war, whose word processing machine sold well. However, failing to consider the compatibility in computers, Wang An and his corporation gradually lost the market and failed in the end. Having seen the failures in the firms including Wang An’s, many companies began to emphasize the compatibility of their products; some of them won the game finally—at least are successful today--such as Microsoft, IBM, etc. From then on, the fatal mistake, ignoring compatibility is scarcely committed by today’s IT companies. Hence, the value of history study exists not only on whether it relates to our daily lives, but also on gaining experience, which may be one of the most valuable aspects.

Furthermore, the study of history, especially on the disappeared ancient civilization, is a mean of scientific research, an exploration of human beings to the unknown fields. Why the pyramids in Egypt are so mysterious and perfect in scale and location? What on earth did the technologies of ancient Cardiac surpass that of today? Whether there has existed the civilization of Atlantics? Although many explanation-perhaps scientific-of such questions are provided, we almost cannot reach a correct and most convincing one. The study and exploration on the history may provide an approach of the problem. By doing so, we may manage to discover some lost valuable technologies that are probably significant illuminations of today’s science; we can also find out the factors of a civilization’s vanishing to identify whether someone is still acting one. In a word, the study of history sometimes is an effective way of aiding scientific research.

In conclusion, we study history for many reasons; thus, the value of it lies on several aspects, of which that it relates to our daily lives is one. History is a mirror that tells us the errors and correctness of the past. It is also a light that illuminates us on some unsolvable issues.
