I strongly agree with the speaker that students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study, questioning what they are taught, instead of accepting it passively, for the reason that skepticism is a necessary ability which students should have, and students can learn much in the in the course/process of substantiating or dispelling skepticism; also, bringing a certain skepticism to what they study can help prevent them from harmful influence of what is incorrect in their study. Yet, students should have a proper attitude to skepticism, for the reason that undue skepticism might do harm to study.
It is undeniable that fostering skeptical thinking is essential to every student. As Descartes said, I think, therefore I am skepticism can tell wrong from good, give people a wise eye. Many great social changes come from skepticism. For example, Copernicus’s theory that the sun is the center of universe relies on questioning the notion that the earth is in a fixed position at the center if universe which had preoccupied people's mind over a long history. Also, the great works, Silent Spring, which awoke modern environmental movements, was based on the skepticism for the mainstream idea that conquering nature is pure progress of human being, which has been taught from long ago. Just holding skeptical thinking to the things around us, people can make great progress and decrease the chances to make mistakes. Thus, cultivating the ability of skepticism is indispensable to students, and people should encourage them to bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study.
Also, students’ skepticism can encourage them to learn much in study in that they must spend more time and energy on substantiating or dispelling their skepticism than accepting it passively. For example, if a student doubts whether Columbus is the first man discovering new continent, America he may look for much information in library and carefully analyze the data, and even, he may do some field research to dig new information. Understandably such activities stimulated by skepticism can contribute much to his or her history knowledge and critical thinking, and may result in a new discovery, for the reason that it is possible that this skepticism can be proved. According recent study, some historian has bring up a new idea that it is Zheng He not Columbus who discovered American first. Admittedly, some skepticism may result in nothing new discovery, however, during the procedure of skepticism the students enjoy a voluntary course of study, during which they can learn much.
Also, skepticism can help prevent students from influence of inappropriate or incorrect thing in what they study. Not all they learn is correct or beneficial, and some is even harmful, especially in the particular period. For example, in the anti-Japan war, pupils in the northeast of china under the reign of Japanese invaders must learn much about concealing Japanese aggression to China and how to be a subdued citizen. Without skeptical thinking, naive students were easily misled by the invaders. Also, in normal times, no one can ensure that all the knowledge taught to students are one hundred percent right, in that human knowledge develops and correct itself day by day. and teachers and parents all taught the knowledge in a proper way; thus, it is necessary to encourage students to learn things through skeptical eyes. In short, students should be doubtful of what they are taught to avoid being misled.
Admittedly, sometimes undue skepticism can be counterproductive to students’ study. First, Young people should first develop a foundation of experiential knowledge, then freely be skeptical to what they told is fact, involving such experiential knowledge they trust before. overfull skepticism before accepting fundamental knowledge may result in confusion and impede further learning. Also, undue skepticism can be psychologically unhealthy when distrust borders on paranoia.
In sum, students should have a certain skepticism to whatever they are taught, which contributes much to their study, whether at fostering an ability of question, learning much in skepticism process, or avoiding misled by incorrect knowledge. Yet, undue skepticism in some case can impede learning
