121. At various times in the geological past, many species have become extinct as a result of natural, rather than human, processes. Thus, there is no justification for society to make extraordinary efforts, especially at a great cost in money and jobs, to save endangered species."

Certainly no one can argue that many, and perhaps most, extinct species became extinct naturally rather than due to human interference. After all, mankind’s length of time on earth, when compared to the age of the planet, is very small. In some instances, mankind is probably lucky that some species became extinct long before we made our first appearance. It is difficult to imagine human beings living alongside dinosaurs, for example. But the idea that we do not need to make efforts to save endangered species is to ignore our responsibility. The necessity of making extra efforts to protect endangered species is going to vary greatly resting with the level of scientific research, the total funding available as well as the species themselves.

Regarding species, some types of beings are doomed to become extinct based on natural selection according to Darwin’s theory of evolution, no matter what situation or environment they are facing. These beings may have some innate defects that prevent them from living on this world either because they suffer from some deleterious gene variations or simply because they are outdated from the process of evolution. For these types of beings, our efforts to save them is of no use to counterwork the natural law, maybe it is only a waste of money and energy. Certain kinds of species will do a great harm to us or our belongings. Consider the rats, the pests as well as the smallpox virus. These species would make it impossible for us to live in the world if it were not for the protection we get from their natural enemy. Imagine that some day in the future, the rats and pests are in danger, should we protect them so that they can easily propagate to a large number to hurt us once again? The thorough elimination of smallpox virus is a good case to answer this question.

There are some kinds of creatures that are in danger and these creatures are indeed valuable to keep diversity in the environment. Obviously these species should receive special efforts to protect them from extinction. Biological and environmental studies have shown that most of these species are victims of the byproduct of the process of civilization, such as the declining of forest, the polluted environment and the like. It could be naturally assumed that we are making our compensation for them in the efforts to save them or it might lead to unimaginably negative consequence in the future.

Another variable is the scientific research level, especially the development of biology which greatly influences our ability to protect endangered species. If the species are worthy and have played an important role in the chain of ecosystem, maybe they should be under special protection. Yet without enough knowledge to take proper measure can not help the species at all even may harm them further. In this situation, perhaps we should at first develop our scientific research, but that would take years before it could benefit the species.

Finally, the amount of funding available has a clear impact on whether the endangered species could be saved. The specific species, the level of scientific research and funding are all interwoven together in an inseparable bundle that makes a simple goal such as protect the endangered species not easy to reach. In many countries, there is simply no money available for protection of any species as they are merely subsistent countries that even lack adequate funding to properly feed their own population. Without adequate funding where the protection needs, only certain types of basic level protection can be performed. There are so many species are in danger, priorities must be made according to what the government can afford and where its highest potential ties.

In theory, simply making extraordinary efforts to save a specific endangered species or not is a simple and quick way to make a decision. In reality, in determining whether the efforts should be made, science, funding and the specific species make the decision much more difficult. Maybe someday in the future, with technology advances, mankind is able to save as many salutary species as possible.
