By providing a more accurate and convincing record, the video camera has become a very important form of documentation. As more people query the utility of written records under its threat, as far as I am concerned, the video camera is far from that of replacing the written records in its dominating role in documentation.

To begin with, the video cameras are more competent in accurately and convincingly recording the events or trivials in our contemporary life. Unlike the written records, the recorders of the videos can hardly add their own opinions, stances and prejudice to the documentation. The only thing they can do is to press down the "record" button of camera and let the machine automatically operate during the recording process. For instance, nowadays many psychologists have adopted the way of recording the whole process of interviews with patients which will be much more useful in the future analysis than the old ways of only putting down the dialogues. In addition, people will always turn to TV news programs rather than solely read newspaper short cover stories for the latest information of today's world. Think about the War in Iraq of 2003, thousands of TV news reporters from all over the world went to the battle field in order to send images and photographs of the war. Through those shocking and astonishing images we saw how cruel the war was and how difficult the soldiers were as well as the fact that civilians were suffering from the tragedy.

Nevertheless, video camera has its own deficits to impede from itself to be the "more" important documentation than books, newspapers and other written records, one of which is that it can hardly provide people some profound and meaningful space for thinking and reflection. Without the video maker's own commentary and opinions on the recorded events or issues that is common in articles, editorials and news or even the history books, many people who watched the video would have seldom possibility to think about the inner truth or meaning behind the superficial facts. Let's still take the example of the Iraq War. I would prefer to read a comprehensive story written by a survival or a soldier who had been sent to Iraq in newspaper rather than only watch TV to see the short news.

Additionally, to claim the video camera has played a more vital role in recording life is unwise because not all the events in life can be recorded by camera. No one will argue that in many occasions, there are things occurred without any forecast and prefigurement. Therefore, we have no way to prepare a video camera beforehand. Imagine an occurrence of a crime; no one would know there will be a crime until some people are really raped, burgled or hurt. Someone who witnessed the crime will have the responsibility to write the whole story down and thus provide the documentation both for the inspection and trial.

Furthermore, the stories recorded by video record tend to be some small fragments and is hard to be organized. Consider the everyday reported news story made by our TV station. Although they have, to a very great extent, exactly and quickly recorded the things and events taking place in the world, it is very difficult for any historian and experts to organize them into a complete and perfect documentation of our contemporary history. Written records are still in need to put down the key events and stories to make a part of human history.

On balance, video camera does provide more effective ways of recording our ever-changing contemporary life in some ways. However the dominant role of written records in so many ways of documentation has not been greatly challenged by the exactness and convincement hat video camera has offered.
