Issue197: 534 words  40 minutes
The material progress and well-being of one country are necessarily connected to the material progress and well-being of all other countries.

In this modern age, I strongly agree with the speaker that every country can no longer isolate itself from the rest parts of the world. In a nation's pursuit of its citizens' economic and social welfare, as well as its safety and health, it is creating a ripple effect--no matter it is detrimental or beneficial--felt all around the globe. And, although I disagree that our global interconnectedness is necessary, I must conclude that today, different countries of the world should view themselves as neighbors of the same village.

To begin with, in term of economy, different countries of the world today are closely connected with each other through the global market and the global financial system. A financial crisis in one country can spell trouble for foreign companies, many of which are now multinational in that they rely on the labor forces, equipment, and raw materials of other nations. And, as trade barriers and the virtual distance between nations collapse, the result is economic synergies among all trading nations. For instance, the economic well-being of Middle East countries relies almost entirely on demand from oil-consuming nations such as the United States, which depend on a steady oil supply from the Middle East.

Nations have also become interconnected in the pursuit of scientific and technological progress. One nation's pursuit for the progress may cause trouble and worries for other countries. For instance, the development of nuclear weapons and biochemical technologies affords the nations possessing them political and military leverage over other nations. What is more, the global computer connectivity has served to heighten national-security concerns of all the connected countries--who can easily fall prey to Internet espionage.

Furthermore, the deterioration of global environment should help us realize that people of different countries are actually in the same boat. Just taking a look at the problem of atmospheric ozone, which has warmed the earth to the point that it threatens the very survival of human beings, we can realize that no nation could escape from the global environment problem. And, we are now learning that the clear-cutting of the rainforests can set into motion a chain of animal extinction that threatens the delicate balance upon which all animals--including humans-depend.

Finally, global media have made it impossible for us to isolate ourselves from the rest of the world. Especially after the introduction of information technology, we are enabled to get to know what is happening at a certain place in a short time through the Internet, satellite television, and the radio. It indicates that we can no longer view ourselves as a isolated part of the world.

In closing, with the development of information technologies and global media as a result, with the financial and economic system as a whole around the earth, and with the environment problems that we should all take responsibility for, we can not deny that nations are more and more dependent on others and they are indeed interconnected. While I concede that a nation can and need to preserve some relative isolation from others, I still hold the opinion that in many aspects of societal life, we are becoming more closed with each other.
世界上最遥远的距离,
不是生与死的距离,
而是我就站在你面前
你却不知道我爱你。
