But turning to the vital role in society the speaker asserts, I will reject them out of hand. In other words, undue reliance on these area produces more negative effects than positive ones.

Admittedly, nonmainstream areas of inquiry cause some positive effects to human beings. Firstly, these areas of inquiry reach the curiosity of human beings. In ancient times, when the predecessors cannot understand the nature, they attribute accordingly with the alternations of positions and movements of the sun, the moon and other stars as well as the advent of myths, such as the ancient Greek myths, the Bible. They try to get to know the wonderful surroundings and make decisions to wed, move, travel and plant, resulting in the emergence of calendar and some customs, which are still generally used in most countries. Secondly, these areas also contribute to the people's relief. On the one hand, the rapid social changes, producing increasingly compelling pressure, distort human mental. In this case, people turn for help from psychological explanation or paranormal pursuits. Facing the numerous tasks one should have to accomplish in a day, most of us dream to gain some supernatural power. Or when involved into troubles, then we hope that a superman appears or we are the supermen as well. On the other hand, it is the human instinct to inquire these nonmainstream areas in that most of us like to predict the future. A child are eager to grow up, an adult dreams to be successful. As the future is still in an unknown world, human would like to turn to the fortune-telling to be encouraged, such as the lucky numbers, lucky days. Undoubtedly, a well-oriented prediction does give us some courage and confidence to pursue the success and target to a certain extent.

However, it is not a welcome scene that the nonmainstream inquiries play a vital role in society, or even do harm to our society. If it is possible in the primitive times these areas dominate in the society, nowadays, as the unprecedented development of technology has greatly extended our capacity, we cannot rely on the fortune-telling or supernatural any longer. After all, these areas are fantastic and unreasonable. Maybe the stars in the sky figure a deity, such as the signs of the zodiac, but the telescopes has told us that these stars are in a distance of millions of light-years and relate little with each other. Similarly, the telecommunication has extended our eyes and voices, the automobile has accelerated our pace, the plane has brought us in the sky and the space shuttle above the sky, so we may not have to make a choice through the tarot cards. Additionally, undue reliance on these fantasies will drive us into fanaticism. In any event, these areas give people the shadow land instead of bread or milk and thus the believers will drop into a false illusion, which might result in excuses to false deeds, especially to the religion mania. We can look no further in any religion wars in history or at present in the Middle East, in which the belief produces the animosity. We can also find the evidence in racialism or genocide.

In sum, I accept that a certain belief in these nonmainstream areas of inquiry pervades in the deep mind in most of us. And sometimes they do give us some confidence to face the trouble in our lives. However, human beings are knowledgeable and thus should be rational. These inquiries should not dominate our lives or even do harm instead of mainstream science.
