Why, you may wonder, should non-mainstream areas of inquiry play a significant role in our society? Because it could cater the nature of human beings. What’s more, it is the disability of science to give clear explanations to some miseries existing in our world that results in non-mainstream of great importance in society. However, the adverse effects that non-mainstream areas of inquiry brings to our society should not be neglected.  

It is the nature of human beings determines the substantial roles which the non-mainstream areas of inquiry plays in a society. There is no denying that most of individuals crave for happiness, expect to be healthy, and fear for anything uncertain and terrible that would happen in the future. The non-mainstream of inquiry panders to curiosities of individuals by predicting the future of oneself and the world around him or her, which cannot be attained by the way of logical thinking and reasoning. The empirical evidence best illustrates this point. Today, one of the most heat columns of web sites is astrology and fortune-telling. Numerous individuals visit these columns to know their daily, monthly and yearly fortune. In short, if no non-mainstream areas of inquiry exist, human beings may be more bewildered, unsettled and scared. .

In addition, not only the need of individuals demands for non-mainstream areas of inquiry, but also the disability of science to interpret a larger number of miseries leave the grass for non-mainstream areas to grow. Assuming that every phenomenon in universe could be explained clearly and reasonably, the importance of non-mainstream would, to some extent, decline. For example, in ancient time in China, peasant believed that if the god was angry she would punish human beings by the way of flood, drought or other natural disasters. So when such things happened, people would sacrifice the cattle and herd to express their guilty to the God. However, when scientists could clearly explain reasons of such natural disasters, the number of sacrifice decreased rapidly, though there existing such activities in some remote villages.

However, the negative effects the non-mainstream brings to our society should not be neglected. It neglects the importance of one’s effort and over-emphasizes on the uncontrolled strength. For example, in ancient time, astrology and fortune-telling served as the tool for autocrats and tyrants to rule the public since astrology informed individuals that one’s fate was determined by God and the efforts could not change one’s destiny, therefore, slaves were fated to be ruled by the upper classes and any effort was useless to change the situation. It was this belief that deceived the populace for hundreds of thousands of years and impeded the development of democratic societies.     

Understandably, the fact that non-mainstream areas of inquiry could satisfy some basic needs of human beings and make up deficiencies of sciences does not prevent us finding that complete believing in the non-mainstream would confine one’s activities and impede improvement of a society . With the development of science and technology, the significance of the non-mainstream areas of inquiry would decrease.
