I54 ( History teaches us only one thing: knowing about the past cannot help people to make important decisions today.)
正文---
The speaker asserts that history only teaches us that knowing about the past cannot help our making important decisions today. While I concede that current circumstance actually differs from that of the past, what we learn from history is far more than the claim.
Admittedly, we cannot copy the events in history, for the fact that the circumstance and background have changed. Every event occurred in history has its certain circumstance and prerequisite, which existed only in certain historical period. If our endeavor is only to find the same from the history, we will completely fail and achieve nothing. Many problems in history have disappeared and problems we now face are different from them. For example, two hundred years ago, Americans were fighting for freedom, while today the America is a democratic society in which everyone has the equal right, at least superficially; Today we face the enduring problems, such as nuclear weapon, environment, international terrorism, which are beyond the knowledge of the people in the past, so that the history will provide little experience for us in these problems. Therefore, different challenge in different times determines that we cannot replay the historical events.
However, what we learn from the history is far more than simply to copy the history. The history tells us many things about our society and the development of it. We could predictor the future from learning the history. For instance, though learning the history, we know that the development of science is a complex and zigzag process. That is, new theory, such as Copernicus' heliocentric theory, encounters much difficult and eventually replace the old one. Thus we know if we propose a new theory or plan, we should prepare to meet difficult. Also, many experiences from the past would serve as important knowledge for future success. Consider a company's learning from the history. The mistake and successful experience from the past are all the important part of knowledge which leads the company to new success. Thus we indeed learn more knowledge from history than simply to copy the history.
Furthermore, the history serves as an excellent textbook for us to learn about ourselves--human nature. Although the circumstances and periods have changed, human being's natures, such as greed, self-centered, tolerance, and so forth, have change little over different periods of time. Admittedly, the appearance of our natures may differ from that in the past. However, with the difficult to explore our nature, our learning from the history become necessary and even must. For example, in Second World War, the Chauvinism in German led great disaster not only to Germany but also to whole Europe. Such chauvinism just comes from over self-centered and greed nature of Nazism. Fortunately, the government of German learned from the history that Chauvinism is harmful and take effective action to restrict the resurgence of Nazism in all aspects of the society. Therefore we also learn our nature from history.
In sum, although the circumstance and background have change, learning history indeed helps us know more about the future and more about ourselves, which ultimately benefit our current endeavors greatly.

For example, two hundred years ago, Americans were fighting for freedom, while today the America is a democratic society in which everyone has the equal right, at least superficially [这小半句不要吧。]; Today we face the enduring problems, such as nuclear weapon, environment, international terrorism, which are beyond the knowledge of the people in the past, so that the history will provide little experience for us in these problems. Therefore, different challenge in different times determines that we cannot replay the historical events.
However, what we learn from the history is far more than simply to copy the history. [TS句很清晰。] The history tells us many things about our society and the development of it. We could predictor the future from learning the history. For instance, through learning the history, we know that the development of science is a complex and zigzag process. That is, new theory, such as Copernicus' heliocentric theory, encounters much difficult [many difficulties] and eventually replace the old one. Thus we know if we propose a new theory or plan, we should prepare to meet difficult. Also, many experiences from the past would serve as important knowledge for future success. Consider a company's learning from the history. The mistake and successful experience from the past are all the important part of knowledge which leads the company to new success. [对的,现在比较流行的“知识管理”理念就很讲究这个的。] Thus we indeed learn more knowledge from history than simply to copy the history.
Furthermore, the history serves as an excellent textbook for us to learn about ourselves--human nature. Although the circumstances and periods have changed, human being's natures, such as greed, self-centered, tolerance, and so forth, have change little over different periods of time.
