To be an effective leader, a public official must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards.
------正文------
Whether or not an effective leader should maintain the highest ethical and moral standard is one of the intensive controversy problems in the political realm. While I agree with the speaker that the moral standard is necessary and essential to both common people and leaders, the statement that the ethical and moral standard should be regarded as the highest level to judge a leader is open to doubt.
To begin with, having ethics and morality is the basic request to everyone, let alone the leader who has the responsibility to serve the mass. Only if the man can achieve the public standard of moral and ethic, can he gain the respect of others, which is one of the prerequisites of being a leader. The example of Ronald Reagan, one of the greatest presents in American history, can aptly illustrate this point. He gained his reputation and achieved his fruition largely because he honestly and deeply believed in the core principles that he espoused and advocated during his presidency, and his constituency senses that genuineness and responded favorably to it. Therefore, the ethical and moral standard is the first step to achieve for anyone, especially who wants to be a leader later.
What's more, without ethical and moral standard to comply with, the leader may to some extent be an extremist not considering any criterion. History is replete with such example that the government is eventually in failure because the leader's lacking of morality. To be more specifically, Let's recall what had happened in the World War Two, the egregious leader of German, Hitler, regardless of the public interests, pursued his own ideal world, and acted a murderous carnage of innocent. Consequently, the world at that time had been totally in a mass, and people had suffered the one of the ferocious calamity ever happened in the world. And definitely, it is the ignorance of the public morality that leads Hitler to his downfall.
However, we should recognize that the effective leader are all human beings after all, they are not god so that they cannot always hold the "highest" ethical and moral standard. In other words, they might make some mistakes, yet given these mistakes are not so unforgivable we may condone them. For example, the marital indiscretion Kennedy, but few would agree that these personal moral choices adversely affected his ability to lead.
However, although the morality is vital to maintain for a public official who what to be a leader, it can be concluded as the most important factor that influences the effectiveness of a leader, there are also many other ingredients, like the ability, talent, braveness, and so forth. After all, to be a leader is not such kind of easy stuff, and to be moral is the necessary but not the only qualification to be a excellent leader.
All in all, to maintain the ethical and moral plays an indispensable role in everyone especially in the leading career of a leader, However, we should not too strict to these leader in moral standard, after all it is not the only factor one should hold to be effective.
