142(10G10)The article entitled 'Eating Iron' in last month's issue of Eating for Health reported that a recent study found a correlation between high levels of iron in the diet and an increased risk of heart disease. Further, it is well established that there is a link between large amounts of red meat in the diet and heart disease, and red meat is high in iron. On the basis of the study and the well-established link between red meat and heart disease, we can conclude that the correlation between high iron levels and heart disease, then, is most probably a function of the correlation between red meat and heart disease.
Based on a well-established link as well as the result of a recent study, the arguer concludes that the correlation between high iron levels and heart disease is most probably a function of the correlation between red meat and heart disease. However, this conclusion is specious for several reasons.
First and foremost, as the recent study is too vague, even the correlation between high levels of iron and heart disease is open to doubt. Being unaware of either the sample in the study is larger enough and randomly chosen, it is unlikely for us to assess the credibility of this study.
Even if the sample is statistically reliable, as heart disease results from many factors like genetic influences, living habits, working pressure, emotional conditions as well as diets, the arguer should also provide further evidence to substantiate that it is the high level of iron rather than other factors caused the heart disease of the subjects in the study.
Furthermore, this argument is based on the assumption that it is the iron in red meat rather than other elements or components that attributes to heart disease. Yet no evidence is provided to substantiate this assumption. Without a scientific report about the components of red meat as well as their functions, it is quite likely that the iron in red meat is in a form that could hardly be absorbed by human, which renders little credibility for the function of the iron in red meat to cause heart disease. It is also likely that other elements in red meat like copper contribute to the well-established link between red meat and heart disease. Moreover, as the red meat is high in protein and fat, it is more likely that certain kind of protein or fat rather than elements actually contributes to the link. Without ruling out other possibilities, the correlation between iron in red meat and heart disease is specious at best.
Finally, in making this conclusion between the two correlations, the arguer unfairly assumes that only the iron contains in red meat correlates to heart disease. However, common sense tells us that many other food and drinks could also contain a high amount of ---spinach(菠菜)
1) well-established link, 这说明这一点是不容争辩的,注意不要把这一点作为问题来攻击
可以辩的地方
1. 认为是红肉中的铁导致了心脏病?
2. 心脏病的来源: heart diseases result from many synthetic reasons, such as genetic influences, living habits, working pressure, emotional conditions, etc
祝大家好运呀,有空会常来看望大家的。:handshake |
