People can always find similarity in all nations’ most enduring social problems. Building up a global university to engage students in the process of solving the world’s most persistent social problem is a considerable way, but not that practical in view of some present situations and some reason that can not be ignored.
I concede that building up a global university means providing a place for people from different nations with different cultural and knowledge background to communicate with one another so that they can understand and appreciate other nations’ cultures and institutions better, which would help to reduce the friction among nations. For example, energy crisis, environment problems (such as global warming, desertification and the depletion of ozone layer), population explosion are critical problems that all nations have to confront. The co-operation of all nations based on the mutual trust and understanding could show great power in solving problems and it is possible for us to count the day when world’s most present problems have been solved.
Although the idea of building up a global university sounds beneficial to almost every nation, it would emerge a problem that we have to face up to in practice. The problem is that it would be much more difficult than we image for nations to cooperate selflessly. Throughout history, in every country’s law, the interest of a country comes first instead of so-called world problems. A country would not pay any attention to world problems unless it is involved in the affairs. For instance, if Hitler had cared a little bit more about other nations, there might not have been a World War II. There is another example. Russian did not attend the World War II and watched the fire from the bank until Germany took Russian by storm. In short, a selfless cooperation only exits in ideologue’s mind.
Moreover, solving the world’s problem should come back to its origin----selfishness and greedy, the black side of human nature. The complexity of the world's most persistent social problems can not be despised and it is impossible to solve these problems simply by building up a global university, otherwise a problem is no longer problem. It is human’s selfishness and greedy that most problems derive from according to philosophical theory. Energy crisis, environment problem war, and slaughter, which one is not derived from human’s greedy and selfishness by plundering treasure of nature and other nations. If everyone has the concept of “others” in mind, would there be any enduring problem hard to solve left?
To sum up, the idea of all nation supporting the development of a global university to engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems might be tempting but not practical and impossible to solve the problems root and branch. These persistent problems will always be persistent as long as the black side of human nature holds a seat in people’s minds.
