The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives.

Nowadays many historians felt puzzled in the question: how to qualify the value of historical research. Some suggested the answer as the speaker’s that study of history has importance only in that it is relevant to our daily life. In my point of view, however, the study of history benefits us in far more than one way.

Admittedly, people can learn a lot in daily life through the study of history. Generally speaking, in the long history of human beings, the nature of a person-including the emotion and desire- stays constant, which enables us to analogy with the precursors. By following the way leading to the success of some celebrities, or by stopping in advance of potential mistakes history has demonstrated us can individual at present time plan his or her future. Following the road history points to us, we will feel confident and secure even the future is uncertain. In addition, some virtues could be handed down through one generation to another via the study of history. That is how we learn to be self-dependent like Benjamin Franklin as well as to be “man thinking” like Emerson.

However, the profit historical study can bring us is far beyond what we gain in everyday life. Take the politics as an example. In the U.S. when the Court encounters a controversial case which is hard to decide which side should win, the judges often refer to the historical document to make a decision; and this has become a tradition in the law system because the Constitution cannot be so detailed as to cover all possible situations in the modern society. Similarly, before the election, a huge amount of the funds the candidates spend to be prepared is on the study of the history in order to propose the most expedient policies about the future in order to win the election. In other aspects, similarly, the history is also undertaking the guiding task.

But does historical research always make such noticeable contribution to human beings? Some may be on the opposite sides. They may argue that the projects like digging a tomb or trying to translating the hieroglyph will make little, if any, beneficial contribution to our modern society. It is true that a considerable part of historical study does not benefit modern society in such a direct way, which does not mean that those researches are meaningless, futile and wasteful. What we should be aware of is that it is our past the historian is studying-sometimes it cannot help to solve the problems facing us, but it is a kind of support of our spiritual world. Neglecting the past, people who focus too much on the presence and the future, though will be efficient to some extent, but will also turn out to be mean and inconsiderate.

All in all, the reason why the study of history is being undertaken is not merely because of the valuable influence on our daily life, but also in the other aspects in modern society and in our spiritual life.

importance 本身就有“重要性，价值”的意思，但我也不知道可不可以这样用:L

这个句子好像是太长了，其实就是individual can plan his or her future by... or by...这样的倒装是不是不太好呀？

It is true that a considerable part of historical study does not benefit modern society in such a direct way, which does not (but it does not?) mean that those researches are meaningless, futile and wasteful.

这样的从句我好像在那里看到过的，应该可以用吧？
