38.In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books.



I partly agree with the author’s view that in the age of television, reading books is not as so important as it once was. However, this dose not mean that watching television can replace reading books as a way of learning.

In the first place, as the invention of television, books is no longer the only way to acquire information, and therefore reduce the importance of books. With the help of television, people could get knowledge of what happens in any part of the world instantaneously, understand customers of other countries, and get information about other people’s life. Through some historical documentaries, people could review what happened in the past time. Scenery documentaries help people feast their eyes on worldwide sceneries. Due to living broadcast we have chance to experience the excitements when our favorite athletes come on stage.

Moreover, television has some advantages that books do not have. Television always gives people a more vivid image. This will be helpful in some time. For example when learn cooking, people will feel confused by reading cooking books, which always only list several processes. However, if the processes are made into a kinescope, then people will clearly understand the cooking processes after watching the kinescope. Another merit of television is that it could provide instant information. Thanks to television, it gives me the chance to witness the exciting moment when Gymnastic Men’s Team of China won the gold medal in Sydney, which is the first Olympic gold medal they win.

However, books is still indispensable because of its distinct advantages. First, ordinary audiences usually have few rights to decide the programs played in television. They have to watch programs which are chosen by television stations at the time also determined the television stations. On the contrary, reading books has more freedom. People could read any book they like at any time .Moreover, books always offer more detailed information. For example, because the time limitation , historical documentaries usually give general information about historical events. On the contrary, historical books are more specific. And if one book not provide enough information readers want, they could find more in another book. Furthermore, books is more portable than television. People could read books at any place they want. By the contrast, television is too heavy to carry, and thus limits its use.

To sum up, due to television, people have another access to information. However, television and books respectively have their own advantages. It is obvious that television could not replace books. Both of them are powerful instruments to help us acquire more knowledge.
