Issue185
Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.
--正文--
The speaker contends that scandals almost in all realms can be useful and attract our eyes on problems by means which speaker or reformer never could. I fundamentally agree with the speaker's claim for the following reasons.

First of all, the instant influence of scandals is often huge. Usually, scandals involve the big figures such as Watergate incident about Nixon, the president of U.S, and powerful organizations or companies such as the Salt Lake Winter Olympic Games scandal about bribery and a wave of creative accounting in U.S in 2002. These scandals not only impact on a country or company, but also shock the whole world. However, speakers and reformers, relative to these big figures and organizations, are often unknown to public. Even if one of them makes a similar mistake as celebrities do, people seldom pay attention to him because only rare public know him. Only when the reformer's affirmation is widely acknowledged by the public, he can focus our attention. Also, it may take a long time to be accept by the majority. We cannot see the transient effect of the reformer or speaker's allegations. Thus, scandals, always involving the well-known people or organizations, have more intensive effect on the society than reformers and speakers do.

Furthermore, scandals always alert people not to make the mistake in the future. It is because of their huge influence that can warn us of the fault previous people made. The consequence of scandals is always severe. WorldCom, for example, a famous American telecommunication enterprise, was disclosed that they did a creative accounting. As a result, the related stuff was accused of accounting fraud and the stock worth in market went down billions of dollars rapidly. Eventually, as we expected, WorldCom went bankrupt. This means many people were employed and those who possessed the stock of the company have lost a lot of money. This is a just one example of the wave of creative accounting in 2002 which stroke the economy of--whether U.S or other nations--seriously. These vivid events are open to our eyes, which caution people not to commit them again because they are harmful not only to the people involved but also to the society, even extent to affect other innocent people in other countries. Therefore, scandals can admonish people and prevent from making such mistakes again owing to their severe consequences.

It is good that scandals are exposed to the public. However, what we should emphasize is how to avoid making them again. If we always focus on the scandals themselves, in my opinion, it is a waste of time and money. They are no good for us preventing the problems from occurring once more and solving the problems thoroughly. We should analyze the whole event and find out the sticking point. I think this is what we must do for the purpose of avoiding committing them again. If we only regard scandals as entertainment news, I’m afraid that we will see the analogous events soon in the future. In Chinese there is a proverb that correcting it as soon as we find a mistake. In my point of view, it is also suitable for the scandals. Hence, after a scandal is revealed, we should pay more attention on avoiding and solving the problems.

To sum up, scandals always have huge influence on the society due to celebrities and famous enterprises or organizations involved. On the other hand, owing to severe consequences of the scandals, they can admonish us and prevent from occurring again. Therefore, it is useful to uncover the scandals, but after disclosed what is the most important is that we should put more emphasis on avoiding and solving the problems not on themselves.
