Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science.

There is an on-going debate over the effect of the nonmainstream areas of inquiry in our society. Some people maintain that these areas of inquiry, such as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits, play an important role in our society because they can satisfy human needs that are not addressed by maninstream science, while others insist that such these areas only play a negative role in our society. In my view, such nonmainstream areas of inquiry indeed have some positive influence in some extent, however, they also have some disadvantages, and along with the development of science, this nonmainstream will be eliminated at last.

To begin with, nonmainstream areas of inquiry play a positive effect in some situations now and before. Some times they can be beneficial to the steady of society. People who lived thousands of years ago did not know why the sky would rains and why it is sunshine. They believed that there were some gods living in the heaven and when people do something wrong, the god would be angry and thus the sky rains. So they would introspection usually. This would help the society to be a steady one in some sense. Moreover, these areas of inquiry can assuage people's dread on something that cannot be explained by science. Most of people are afraid of death, but if one believes that people's soul still can live after death, he may be not so frighten even if he is sick seriously.

On the other hand, the nonmainstream areas also play a negative role in our society. First, they will prohibit the development of our science. When most of people in our society believe the nonmainstream areas, the extending of our science is a difficult task. An opt illustration of this point involves Bruno. In his time, people were controlled by the church. When he discovered the heliocentric theory, it was hard to be conceded. Further, these nonmainstream areas will sometimes make people feel frustrated. People who concedes destiny will be easily frustrated when he fails or meets some obstacle. He would think that it is his life and his destiny, and no matter what effort he makes, he will fails at last.

Finally, by the development of our science, these nonmainstream areas of inquiry will be eliminated at last. All these areas-astrology, fortune-telling, and so on-are created by people's subjective thoughts. But now, more and more aspects of inquiry can be explained by our science. For example, now we know that the sky thundering is because of moving of the clouds but not because of the fury of the gods. When our science can be developed enough, these nonmainstream areas of inquiry will not exist.

In conclusion, there is no easy solution to such a complex issue. However, due to the reasons mentioned above, we could draw a safe conclusion that nonmainstream areas of inquiry play both negative and positive role in our society, and they will be eliminated by our science.
