Does the way people look, dress, and act reveals their personal attitudes and interests, further more, reveals a society's ideas and values? I tend to establish a balanced opinion. From a whole social perspective, the external appearance of individuals are of vital importance towards the society's ideas and values. While considering the variety of people in a certain society, profound and essential characteristics of a society may not be revealed through the external appearances.

First of all, I must admit that the society's spiritual aspects is greatly reflected by the individual's external appearances. Society, which is composed of massive number of its individuals, evolved through considerable long time of history, characterized by agriculture and industry development, dressing convention, ideas of education,  moral standards, so on so forth. All of the aspects that linear a specific society are dominated by people's action of that era towards a certain issue. In other words, the external appearances of people in society have a close relationship with the society's involvement. For instance, just from the dressing taste of a typical Chinese and an American, much of the two different characteristics between the two nation can be told, Chinese tend to be introvert, while Americans are likely to proved extrovert. Therefore, to a large extent, the way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests, at the same time, a society's ideas and values are reflected.

However, the above discussion is on a basis of general consideration regarding the society as a whole, while considering the multiplication or variety of different individuals in society, the external appearance sometimes cannot tell the more profound aspects of a society. A society displays a colorful spectrum of different underlying intrinsic characteristics of its members. There are introverts and extroverts, laziness and indigence, sublime and mean ones in any of societies of our mundane world. Here is an example in point, from the external appearances of an extrovert Chinese and an intrinsic American, of course, the conclusion what general characteristics of Chinese and American would be like. Therefore, the intrinsic nature of  a society that it is composed of largely difference of its members breaks the reflection of the whole society's ideas and values.

Finally, there is more subtle point to consider. There is sometimes deliberate activities to mask the genuine truth of one's real attitudes and interests. In this case, to merely depend on the external appearances of people is dangerous, it probably leads to problematic conclusions on people's attitudes and interests, not along the society's ideas and values.

In sum, synthesis of the foregoing discussions may reach a balanced conclusion that individuals’ external appearances that the way they dress, look and act reflects the social ideas and values at a large scale of time, while only depends on the external appearance of its people, a whole and exact picture or comprehension of a society can never be achieved. The way people dress, look and act just partially reveals the spiritual world of their own and the specific society.

总结：人们的外表在一定程度上反映了他们和社会的精神层面，但是，基于人的能动性，有时单单相信外表无法做出正确的推断。
