50"In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
其实还是很佩服自己的,这样的题目第一次写的时候竟然完全跑题~~
所以决定还是再好好看一遍题库
=======================
Should the professors solely work in universities and colleges or should they spend sometime working in professions relevant to the courses they teach? It is a complex issue. After carefully weighing the advantages and disadvantages, I think that working in the professions relevant to the courses they teach can brush up the quality of the professors’ instructions, but they should not put overemphasis on the professions.
Stepping out of the lecture hall and laboratory and spending some time working in professions relevant to their courses can give the professors chances to know the need of the world. Thus, they can better prepare their students to meet the needs of the society. On of the aims of education is provide individuals who can contribute to the society. And only when the educators know the demand of the society, can this aim be well fulfilled. Many universities and colleges graduates find it is very difficult for them to truly make use of their knowledge. They are confused about how to put the theories and concepts on their textbooks into practice. If the professors work in some professions, they may better understand what the society truly need and thus they can teach the students more concrete process of how the theories would be and could be used. By getting into working in relevant professions, the professors can help their students to suit into the society easier.
And, in some academic field, there are some knowledge can never be got in the universities and colleges. The professors should working in relevant professions to get the knowledge, and then can the give more accurate and precise knowledge to their students. Take medical science for example. It is a common situation every doctor will face: patients always show different symptoms when they are suffering from the same illness, and they may also show identical symptoms but suffering from different diseases. While in textbooks, only the most typical symptoms are described. If professors of clinical medical science never work as a clinical doctor, never watch and treat several patients themselves, they are hardly able to tell the students how to look through the superficial symptoms and define the disease the patients are suffering from, not to say tell the students how to effectively treat the patients. In the courses requires practice more than theories, like medical science, it is vital for the professors to work in the professions that are relevant to their study. Otherwise they may fail to give efficient instructions to their students.
However, though working in relevant professions can improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, people should not overemphasize on the professions and overlook the potential harm. Firstly, the energy of people is limited, if professors works in some profession, they would spend less time in their academic world. Since we are living in a world of rapid changes, if the professors spend too much time on those professions, they may possibly omit the new discoveries and progresses in their academic world, and fails to give the students the new information in time. Secondly, when they working in the professions, they may not able to resist the temptation from the material world and may finally abolish their academic world to pursuit fame or wealth. If many professors leave their laboratories and the academic world, the damage to the academic world is horrible.
All in all, if the professors can fairly balance the academic world and the secular world, the quality of instruction will inevitably be improved. |
