Argument117 第3篇 让砖头来得更猛烈些吧!
------摘要------
作者:寄托家园作文版普通用户 共用时间:42分50秒 383 words
The following is a memo from the business manager of Valu-Mart stores.
'Over 70 percent of the respondents to a recent survey reported that they are required to take more work home with them from the workplace than they were in the past. Since Valu-Mart has not seen impressive sales in its office-supply departments in the past, we should take advantage of this work-at-home trend by increasing at all Valu-Mart stores the stock of home office machines such as printers, small copy machines, paper shredders, and fax machines. We will also increase stock of office supplies such as paper, pens, and staplers. With these changes, our office-supply departments will become the most profitable component of our stores.'
Syllabus:
1. the sample size and whether the sample of the survey is a random sample
2. the real causes of no impressive sales in its office-supply departments in the past
3. the components and other potential profitable sources
------正文------
In the arguments, the arguer concluded that Valu-Mart stores should increase stock of office supplies in order to increase the store's profit. To substantiate the conclusion, the arguer cited a survey on the work-at-home trend. At first glance, the argument is well-reasoned. However, after careful examination, I find out that there are at least the following fallacies in the argument.
First of all, the arguer failed to provide the details of the survey and therefore the creditability of the survey can be doubted. If the sample size of the survey is not enough large, the statistics of the survey are not creditable. Obviously, we can not expect that a survey including only 15 respondents can tell us some meaningful things. Furthermore, we also do not know whether the sample of the survey is a random sample. If it is not, the statistics of the survey is biased. It means that it is nothing for us.
Secondly, the argument is undermined by the fact that the arguer failed to take into account the real causes of no impressive sales in its office-supply departments in the past. As we know, the work-at-home trend has existed for a long time. Perhaps the trend recently becomes more obviously. If this is the case, why did the Valu-Mart stores fail to make much profit in its office-supply departments? It is entirely possible that the past failure result in the company's management. If it can not improve its management, it will not make profit even if the work-at-home trend continues.
In summary, the components and other potential profitable sources are also important for the decision on office-supply departments of Valu-Mart stores. If the components have gain huge advantages over Valu-Mart stores, the only thing what Valu-Mart stores can do is probably to exit from the competition of office-supply. Given that there are many potential profitable sources for Valu-Mart stores, the stores should make the decision after taking into account all potential profitable sources.
In summary, the arguer pointed out a potential profitable source for Valu-Mart stores. However, we should be provided with more information on the details of the survey, the real causes of the failure in the past, the components and other potential profitable sources before a conclusion on the increase of office supplies is reached.
