History teaches us only one thing: knowing about the past cannot help people to make important decisions today.
The function of history is an issue that never ceases debating. The speaker claims that the only lesson history teaching us, ironically, is that knowing about the history cannot help us to make important decisions today. In my opinion, however, the knowledge of the past does have a more important significance in helping us make better decisions.

Admittedly, historical knowledge is not sufficient to make vital decisions in such a changing world. In natural science realm such as astronomy and meteorology, by collecting the data of past evidence and analyzing the physical rule beneath those phenomena, scientists can make precise prediction about the coming events. In the social realm, however, the historical phenomena are so complicated that no certain rule can be easily found to direct a decision at present. Human history is always full of changes and random events, and significant difference can be found even in very similar situations. Thus, there is hardly a guarantee that the same thing must happen in the future and thereby we can make the same right decision as predecessors did. Just look at those French generals who demanded their soldiers to defense behind Maginot line, where German troops attacked in the last war. Yet the Germans changed their rout this time and surprised Paris, causing the tremendous loss of the Allies. From this historic event and many like stories, history does teach us a lesson that one should not take it for granted that what happened before will happen today.

However, this does not follow that knowing about the past cannot even help people to make decisions. We should never simply repeat the decisions of predecessors, yet historical knowledge can benefit us in other ways. To begin with, historical knowledge can help us understand the contemporary events better. Our present times is the extension of the history, without knowing which one cannot understand this world. A recent heated debate, e.g., whether Japan should be allowed to join the UN safety committee is just a case in point. Knowing nothing about the misery Japanese troops led to many East Asian countries in the World War II, and knowing nothing about the attitude of Japanese government toward these people after war, one can be confused that why almost all neighbors of Japan are strongly against the proposal, and thus cannot make a sound decision in this case.

Moreover, even some historical knowledge is far from our life today, such as what had happened in ancient Rome or in the medieval, their stories can still give us some hint when we facing the same kind of choices. Unlike natural science, we cannot try to understand human behavior by doing experiment, while by analyzing their behaviors and the following results, the history of our predecessors can be regarded as a "laboratory" of human activities. From the fall of Rome empire, for instance, we can know how it would be if the people become too dissipated; from the French Revolution, we can find what would be the result of anarchy; from the rein of Stalin and Hitler, we can learn how the totalitarianism can brainwash people and  suppress their mind.  Although these lessons cannot be directly copied in making decisions that we are facing, yet these experiences can always be there, warning us never to make the same mistakes again.

In the final analysis, knowing about the past might not help us directly make decisions today, yet by learning about the past is still vital in our decision making: it will not only help us understand the contemporary issues better, but also help us avoid repeating the mistakes that predecessors have committed.

History teaches us only one thing: knowing about the past cannot help people to make important decisions today.
The function of history is an issue that never ceases debating. The speaker claims that the only lesson history teaching us, ironically, is that knowing about the history cannot help us to make important decisions today. In my opinion, however, the knowledge of the past does have a more important significance可以用a修饰? in helping us make better decisions.

Admittedly, historical knowledge is not sufficient (insufficient) to make vital decisions in such a changing world. In natural science realm用of形式是否好些? such as astronomy and meteorology, by collecting the data of past evidence and analyzing the physical rule beneath those phenomena, scientists can make precise (语气过强了吧?) prediction about the coming events. In the social realm, however, the historical phenomena (既重复又不当,换?) are so complicated that no certain (MS绝对) rule can be easily found to direct a decision at present. Human history is always full of changes and random events, and significant difference can be found even in very similar situations. Thus, there is hardly a guarantee that (中式?) the same thing must happen in the future and thereby we can make the same right decision as predecessors did.

To begin with, historical knowledge can help us (类似的表达重复太多吧?) understand the contemporary events better. Our present times (删?) is the extension of the history, without knowing which one cannot understand this world. A recent heated debate, e.g., whether Japan should be allowed to join the UN safety committee (日本不是常任理事国,但应该是安理会成员吧?) is just a case in point. Knowing nothing about the misery Japanese troops led to many East Asian countries in the (during) World War II, and knowing nothing about (虽是排比,但缺乏变化。) the attitude of Japanese government toward these people after the? war, one can be confused that why almost all neighbors of Japan are strongly against the proposal, and thus cannot make a sound decision in this case.

Moreover, even some historical knowledge is far from our life today, such as what had happened in ancient Rome or in the medieval (首字母大写?), their stories can still give us some hint when we facing the same kind of choices. Unlike natural science, we cannot try to understand human behavior by doing experiment(自然科学也未必都是靠实验的啊!), while by analyzing their behaviors and the following results, the history of our predecessors (露脸过多!) can be regarded as a "laboratory" of human activities.

Goodall's mother once told her:
"Jane, if you really want to do something, you work hard, you stick to it until there's an opportunity."
