Argument51 The following appeared in a medical newsletter.
'Doctors have long suspected that secondary infections may keep some patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain. This hypothesis has now been proved by preliminary results of a study of two groups of patients. The first group of patients, all being treated for muscle injuries by Dr. Newland, a doctor who specializes in sports medicine, took antibiotics regularly throughout their treatment. Their recuperation time was, on average, 40 percent quicker than typically expected. Patients in the second group, all being treated by Dr. Alton, a general physician, were given sugar pills, although the patients believed they were taking antibiotics. Their average recuperation time was not significantly reduced. Therefore, all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment.'
------正文------
In this medical newsletter, the arguer recommends antibiotics as part of treatment to all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain. However, close scrutiny of cited evidence reveals it lends little support to the arguer's suggestion.

To begin with, the reliability of the study of two groups of patients is open to question. For one thing, we are not told how many people are involved in the study, or whether they are equally distributed into two groups. If the overall number of people involved in the study is too small to draw any meaningful conclusion from, or the number of one group of people far surpassed that of the other, then the arguer could not base the study as evidence. For another, this argument offers us no detailed information about the age, sex, health conditions, etc, about the two groups of people, which are relevant to the result of the study. If one group of people are mainly old women with some kind of serious illnesses such as heart problems and high blood pressures, while the other consists of young boys in generally good health state, then the result of study is further from cogent, since the subjects are not in the relatively the same condition before any measures are taken in the study.

Even granted reliability of the study, the arguer unfairly assumes that taking antibiotics is attributable for the shorter recuperation time of the people in Dr. Newland's group. However, aside from taking antibiotics regularly throughout treatment, a myriad of factors may equally explain their quicker recovery: a special diet or other medicines prescribed to the patients in the first group may also shorten their recuperation time. Unless the arguer can rule out these alternative explanations for the result of the study, we could not take his/her conclusion seriously.

Even assuming that it is antibiotics that are conducive to people' quicker recovery in the first group, it does not necessarily follow that all people diagnosed with muscle strain should take antibiotics as part of their treatment. For one thing, the only time the arguer can claim the usefulness of antibiotics is when people with muscle strain problems are at the same time experiencing infections. Yet no evidence in this article proves so. On the other hand, the prescription of antibiotics to all people diagnosed with muscle stain might bring some of them unwanted side-effects, such as nausea and dizziness at the same time. Given each of these scenarios, the arguer should be more careful to recommend antibiotics as part of treatment.

To sum up, more information is needed to justify the merits of this medical newsletter.

(与其谈health condition还不如谈seriousness of their injuries)
