戴云说单数名词不能单独存在，可这几道题是怎么回事？

我知道need是错的，可为什么knowledge单独存在?
2、XX (often) complained how( few )material his life( provided )for his (fiction ).              
答案选few,可fiction又是单独存在，而且material不是可数的吗？
3、(The) main (advertising) media include (direct mail), radio,television,magazines a-nd (newspaper)  答案是newspaper.direct mail 也是单独存在
4、Designers of athletic footwear finely tune each (category of shoe )to its particularly activity by studying human motion。这道题做对了，可是不知道shoe为什么是单数？

我的感觉：
1 knowledge抽象名词，不可数，也不用加the.
2 fiction 前面有his,则不用加a
3  radio,television,magazines 指一类任何事物，
4 不知道
