整句的意思是
化石残留物显示在该物种生存的更早一些的时代，区别只是在于大脑大小与其头盖骨大小的比例还要更小一些。

第二个问题，我选a，不知道原因，只因为我觉得其他3个根本不通顺。高手出来指点一下，昨天也有人讨论到这个第二题。

第二题怎么有人说C选项是印刷错误?应该是the sum of whose.

Fossile remains reveal that (compare with the proportion of the animals lived这段些这里是帮助理解，如果都这么写了，也是个错句)the farther back in the time (when) the animal lived, its brain in proportion to the size of its skull was smaller.

(compare with its size nowadays or some period they mentioned before. It's not a paragraph.)
我推测是用这个化石和比它更早的化石样本比较。比它更早的那些化石，比例更小一些。

第二题如果说印刷错误可以重新分析一下，不过the sum of whose我看着还是不大顺眼
